Temptation, Suspicion, Obsession…
I am not exactly sure what amount of FAIL this is but let’s just say that it’s quite astronomical!
I am of course talking about the fail fact that I am only finding out about this movie like, right now!!!! Can you like, believe that!?! Not only did this movie release to press at a Film Festival way back in Q2 of 2019, but the first trailer came out way before then!
But look here, this Doofus is only finding out about it just now, in the Q2 of 2020! That’s more than a year of time to find out about this movie and yet I have failed miserably!
Ah, but the fail doesn’t that all make. Not only is this movie 100% my tastes (Gothic, Horror, Atmospheric with Gays abound), but I have recently bought the digital version of the original novella and finished reading it!
I frikkin bought a book that this movie is based on, read and finished the book and still I did not know about CARMILLA (2020)!
Please someone, just kill me right now…
There is absolutely no excuse for this! The only reaching I can make is that I confused it with the Carmilla movie of the Carmilla web series that is so popular so I did not bother looking into it! But like I said, that is reaching!

Anyway, unlike that fun little thing, this movie seems to be quite faithful to the source material, albeit with some changes, the really good kind I mean!
First off though, this movie looks frikkin gorgeous! It is such a crime that it will not be appreciated by a lot of people given its small stature. Like, look at how beautiful this looks!!!?!
Just from the different trailers I have seen (There’s I think three different ones, the American, the UK version and something else) there is already some changes and the biggest one is the gayness! That aspect was turned up to 11 from what I know of! I am about to go read reviews from that screening back in 2019 so I will probably find more but that is all I need right now!
The gayness in the book, you see, was IMPLIED, and unless one was used to all things yuri, they would totally miss it but as we can see in these caps from the trailers, there was no implying going on here, just evidential facts!
That fact alone already has this movie on my Top 10!
From the reviews I’ve lined up, one of my go-tos when it comes to horror reviews has given the movie a 10/10! Like, that is a perfect score right there! Now, while that might be more for the horror side and story, what makes a perfect yuri movie? One with other aspects perfectly executed as well! The only other time I’ve seen that perfect balance was few in between!

Another change made it seems might be in Laura’s age. From what I hear she is 16 in this movie whereas she was 19 in the novella! Oh well, no complaints here! I just hope that another change made will be the ending because that ending in the book sucked balls, especially given the change in chemistry between Laura and Carmilla!
Speaking of the book, it was quite short so I am surprised to see what extras they add into the story in order to make it a 90min movie! Something else to look forward to for sure! Also, the Lady we see in the trailers, if she is in the book, her character has been drastically changed! In the book there was no such Lady with that amount of authority over Laura, in fact Laura was more of a Daddy’s girl as her mother died at birth and her Father was the one looking after her. There were two other Ladies in the house but they did not have even 1/20th of Laura’s appearance so that is another major change from the book.
And another change, just from the trailers alone, is about Carmilla herself. In the book she never came out during the day and she never ate. But we clearly see her eat in the trailers and there are a lot of scenes that don’t fit into the book.
I am all for them of course because they give me hope that the plot might change too, especially that ending!
Oh well, we shall have to wait and see. Unfortunately, I am not sure for how long seeing as with everything else, CARMILLA too did not escape the pandemic! But from what I hear rights are being passed around so maybe…just maybe…
Anyway, that is all and again, I am shamed that I am only finding out about this movie right now…

Hey not sure if you’ve heard about this before, but there’s a new Thailand horror movie called ‘The Maid’ on Netflix, it’s a great movie and have a great plot twist, and oh it’s totally gay. Basically it’s what happens if ‘The Handmaiden’ goes south and having a horror-slasher genre instead.
