Just thought I would get that out of the way first!
But thankfully unlike most times, this time a BAD END doesn’t negate the love! And really, this is a horror series and right to the usual no.1 rule, the protagonist is the only survivor!
You know, I love Horror. It is my favourite genre so maybe some of my Readers won’t feel the same way but I love this despite the ending, well, the implied ending! But if you were paying attention you know that Lana is dead!
As for the series, it’s about Etta, a thief for hire and a hardcore enthusiast of LP records! If a record exists and someone wants it, she will find it for you, but not before listening to it because to her, as long as it exists, it must be listened to.
There just so happens that there are a series of peculiar and very unique records that can only make sense when listened to together at once and once you have listened to them, then you are ready for the King of Records which no one has survived listening to without dying or going completely insane!
Unfortunately, Lana, Etta’s girlfriend and soon to be fiancée, gets a package from someone which contains the said deadly label. When Etta gets to her house, the label is playing and she is sitting in her couch, unmoving, her usually dark hair totally grey and we are reminded of the first death in the series where a listener got mummified from listening to this label.
Why am I so sure that it was Lana? She has her collection of key rings that was mentioned earlier on during her phone conversation with Etta and since Etta enters casually inside and sits to add the ring she stole from the first victim’s house to Lana’s collection, we can only say she has keys to this house.
Also the fact that they avoided showing us the victim adds to to the evidence. Finally Etta crying as she listened to the record also proves that Lana was that person and she is dead.
But what hits the most and makes me love this is that the last message Etta sent to Lana having failed to connect with her, meaning that it was probably too late by then, was that she gave her answer to Lana’s proposal of them getting married! She said that if she wasn’t too late the answer was ‘YES’ to Lana’s marriage proposal.
It hurt that much more knowing that she had gotten over that last hurdle to their life together only that it was just a bit too late! The villain had already gotten to Lana. Lana had no chance! Usually those who survive and go crazy, survived only because they listened to mere split seconds of the record and were saved by someone around. Lana listened for more than mere seconds which meant that she was a goner!
I guess another negative about the series would be that we never see Etta and Lana together again since the opening! They just interact by phone from then on.
I love horror like I said and the series is shot really expertly and colour graded perfectly as well. Too bad it was too short! Seriously, some episodes were like 12min long!!
PS: Lana freaked me out the first time I saw her. She reminded me of some other actress who name I forgot buy I am sure someone remembers…
