Past Lives

Moral of the story, do not burry your demons, or they will eat you alive for the rest of your life!

And yet another story from Spain, which, as I mentioned before, is in the same veins as the other series I have just written about! Well, in the sense that we have a love which takes place in our protagonist’s past that comes back later in her life to teach her a valuable lesson.

This one hurt the most because Rita, short for Margarita, name of our protagonist played by actors Elena Anaya as an adult and Isa Montalbán in the past, was deeply in love with Candela, played by actors Itziar Atienza as an adult and Marina Orta in the past. No, they were both in love with one another, so much so that they almost even killed for one another!

That fact is what makes me angry a little bit because the reason that they went their separate ways was because Rita thought that Candela had killed the dead classmate, when just days before, Rita herself was ready to kill said girl! Not only was it eyebrow-raising but it was only speculation! What’s even worse is the fact that Candela really tried to understand what was going on. She begged for Rita to explain to her and talk to her but Rita just ignored her in her presuming silence!

Alright, let’s take a breather while I explain some things!

So, for a series title Past Lies, you know there is going to be some story that happened in the past for out band of old friends and won’t you know it, the moment that Rita comes back home after the death of her parents to sell their house and move on, the remains of a girl who disappeared years ago surface and won’t you know it, she was a classmate of Rita and her friends and given their reactions, you know they knew her well in addition to knowing what happened to her.

The detective who takes charge of this case happens to be the dead girl’s younger sister, as if things were not screwed already! Having been close to the other friends, she of course immediately locked onto them when she saw their reactions, or lack thereof, when she informed them of her sister’s remains having been found!

As you can imagine, skeletons begin showing up and I don’t mean that literally! We already have Rita and Candela’s misunderstanding and glaring elephant in the room as Rita still thinks that Candela killed the girl! The truth is that no one knows who killed her except the one that did the killing!

What’s brilliant about this though, is that even us as observers can’t tell who the real killer is! The secret was so well hidden and all the friends, even others not among them, had strong reasons to kill the girl!

You see, she had dirt on almost everyone and used it to manipulate them all, mostly to get money because her family was not all there, and she was looking to get away from that place! It was kind of a sad story because even if she wasn’t that great, it can be said that the girls made the monster by constantly bullying her!

This of course implies that the bullying came before the manipulation! But then it wasn’t really bullying but more like the girls did not want her hanging out with them! It was really well-done hiding things and making you second guess yourself until the very end when we are flat out told what happened!

Now that is what I call good fuckin television!

And that’s just about the story! But we are here for something else, aren’t we?

*HA! GAEYYYYYY!*

Jokes aside, even if it was in flashbacks, I really loved Rita and Candela’s relationship! And really, to be truthful, I always feel damn good about the girl winning the straight girl because you know that she has not knocked the hotdog before trying it and thus there is no second-guessing later when she starts to date girls! She has been there and done that and now she is trying that roast beef, and she prefers it!

But anyway, from the first moment they interact, to the first time they kiss – which happens to be Rita’s birthday by the way, talk about a gift, I really loved everything about them!

The way they kissed! God! And just like Ginia and Amelia with their unique dancing, Rita and Candela here also have their unique way of kissing that just mesmerises me and makes me go, now, there is a way to kiss that I’ve never seen before!

It’s like, how to explain it, so, Candela opens her mouth right? Then Rita moves in and kisses wraps her lips around Candela’s upper lip, right? And then slowly Candela encloses her lips around Rita’s, right? And they do it every time and each time I just stare like I was witnessing the birth of the universe!

Yeah, I didn’t know that I would be shocked seeing people kiss at this stage in my life but here we are!

It’s just May and I already have the most intimate dance with Ginia and Amelia as well as the most unique kiss with Rita and Candela! I call that a WIN!

Unfortunately, it’s not all sunshine and roses because the two are still not out with their relationship! Yes, I understand it was a while ago and there were still biases and Rita was a rich girl with strict parents but still, at the very least come out to your close friends, right? I mean, one of them already knew anyway and the others had even worse secrets being kept but then again, through the looking glass, am I right? Heck, Rita was so scared to come out that, like I said, she was almost ready to kill the dead girl, who had walked in on them making out!

In addition, this was all in the past! In the present Rita has a new girlfriend, her producer (Rita is now a big shot movie director), with whom she moves back home with to help her sort out the house issue. Bad idea, when you still have unresolved feeling with your past girlfriend!

Good thing is that the new girlfriend is very understanding and has her head on straight! In the end she gives Rita the space she needs to sort herself out and Rita does just that!

I have to say I felt cheated when we were led to believe that her and Candela could get back together, like fuck, they went through the whole process! The talked about and sorted the demons from the past, they got together again and had some long ass needed making out, it seemed that they had come to a positive and promising understanding!

But then when Rita decided to honour their promise from the past by inviting Candela to come back with her to London, when even Rita’s current girlfriend showed that she knew Rita still had feelings for Candela and thus ended their relationship, when everything was on the table for a HAPPY END, the writers were like, NOPE!

Like, there was no reason for that!

Yeah, sure, maybe Candela finally needed to move on and stop living in the past! Maybe it was supposed to be some kind of lesson there about that and for Rita as well! Maybe they were meant to have closure to their unfinished business from the past!

But for fuck’s sakes, Candela was still so stuck there that I doubt she even dated anyone since. The love she was drowning in when Rita left was still there as if Rita had only left yesterday! As for Rita, it’s not like she had stopped loving Candela as well, she was only wrongly informed about what happened back then but her love for Candela was still there!

Sure, maybe it was supposed to be consequences for Rita having doubts not only about Candela but their love!

But going through the motions of making it seems like everything would work out only to drop that ending just doesn’t make sense! It feels like we are back in the 20s where good endings were banned in entertainment or something, for fucks sakes!

Sigh, and that’s my queue to jump ship before I blow steam out of my ears!
