SHIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIP
Resistance is futile!
If you have any complaints, take it up with the me of yesterday!
PS: Iman Benson (Ilonka) is super fine!!!!
All kinds of NOPE!
The Midnight Club!
I don’t know if I should be impressed or disappointed, with how faithful THE MIDNIGHT CLUB – a new series from infamous Mike Flanagan, is to the 90s era, both in story and outside!
In story, as in dealing with the AIDS (and gay) misconceptions and outside story as in we are back to subtext and using the word ‘Sister’ to diverge any confusing attention towards a potential gay ship, which again, is more interesting and attractive than the main straight ship! I won’t name names but there are a lot of series and movies from that era we can all think of! And finally, the bury your gays trope as well, that is if you are already shipping the ship! And really, that’s how it usually went, right? Get rid of the hot competition to give a chance to the boring Guy to win the Girl, like, Boy, you were handed the win!
And, without wasting any more time, I am getting into the point of the day, which is Ilonka and Anya being the best ship on this damn show and leagues beyond the main ship we get! And yes, despite being the only one killed off in the main cast (like, WTF?!), in a story where terminally ill teens go to a place to live their remaining days as they wished, Anya was the best damn character on this show and in fact she is credited third, which makes all kinds of sense that is not!
I was miffed by that but then I gave the writer the benefit of the doubt because maybe, and yes, it was just my thoughts that he is in fact just emulating the 90s, both in and outside the story! Sacrificing best characters was a thing and really, if Anya lived, the apparently main ship of Ilonka and Kevin (really? Kevin?!) would have played second to those two, and really, even as Anya was dead, it still played second!
Interestingly, Ilonka spent tears only on Anya. She said I love you, only to Anya. She sacrificed her life to save Anya in her last story. She was forced to face herself by only Anya! Anya was the only one calling her out on her bullshit! Anya was the only one introduced to Dad and he did like her. Basically, obvious soulmate material!
But as we know, soulmates meant shit back in the day. In fact, it got to the point where we thought soulmates were never meant to be together because they never were! There is lots of evidence for this, even if you were not there to experience things firsthand!
And so, if Mr. Flanagan was looking to emulate the 90s, he sure succeeded!
In that sense, if he was out to deliver this series to a different younger audience, then he also succeeded, because let’s be honest, it is his weakest work! But even still, it makes sense, because the scary came from the stories the characters told and as we know, they are still teenagers. That means their stories left something to be desired, unless they were all literal geniuses in the making!
That fact makes it easy to let the disappointing scares slide. Indeed, if the writer was looking to stay in that period in all angles, they I will forgive for pulling both the ‘Sister’ and ‘Death’ cards on Anya and Ilonka’s relationship!
It felt nostalgic, in a good way!
Does that mean I am not pissed at the end of the day? Hello no! Anya was my favourite character from the show. I cherish the great moments she and Ilonka shared. I will remember that Ilonka sacrificed herself for Anya, even if it was in a story, also, she did save Anya once before in real life when she gave her CPR that one time Anya nearly kicked the bucket!
Ilonka did mention it herself, but girl was obsessed with Anya! Like, not many characters get attracted to other characters that are a complete bitch to them, and man, was Anya super electric towards Ilonka! Usually, it’s the bitchy character that is attracted to their target but not in this case!
This does give a different perspective and I love it for this story!
Personally, I was a bit disappointed, but partly because of self-expectations. That disappointment was somewhat nullified, by giving me something a bit different from what I was expecting as well. In the beginning, I expected to hate Anya’s character, but she ended up being my favourite. That also meant that her relationship with Ilonka was more than what I expected, starting off the episodes. I love them still, even if the ship did not pan out, canonically that is!
They are my ship now!
