Yeah, I believe I speak for everyone when I say that Gayness is the last thing, I expected from this series but as you can see, the world is going crazy!
I of course went into this for the horror as it promised something crazy like Lovecraft Country, that and of course the other part of having an obligation to watch this because it is about ‘Us’ (no pun intended).
To summarize the story short, this is about a Black family that moves into a new all white neighbourhood due to the Dad’s new job as engineer transferring him but also, they might have been running away from the hell that was their previous neighbourhood, which seemed worse than the new one!
Sure, in the new they were dealing with demons as well but as we all know, humans as the worst creatures ever created and what happened to the family in the old was stuff of nightmares and while the new neighbourhood with its introduction of the supernatural was a bit mad too, somehow the first incidents that were all man were much more scary!
Anyway, not only do the family have to deal with the humans who want them out, they have to deal with demons that prey on their insecurities and fears as well! Every member has their own demons to fight and that includes even the children.
Which brings us to the elder daughter Ruby Lee (Love the name), the girl of our focus! Ruby is at that age where her mind goes into weird places! Places like thinking that she could change the way people perceive her or be more beautiful by turning into a white person and she takes that practically, using paint!
No one can blame her of course. In addition to being manipulated by the demons the worst thing is that it is all not the demons’ doing! Part of this is that the characters desire themselves and having been there I can tell you there was a moment where I too prayed to have fairer skin. I mean, even if he was making a statement, the one and only King of Pop did have that actual surgery!
Anyway, Ruby Rose’s demon takes the form of the most beautiful girl you can think of…of course, named Doris – Blonde, killer body, striking blue eyes – basically beauty incarnate. And while Ruby resisted as much as she could, in the end the temptation was just too strong! Not just her, all the family members succumbed to the seduction and it was, poetically, the Mom that saved all of them, despite she being the one most broken and we as viewers deem the crazy one!
Now of course knowing what the series is and the truth of Doris, there was hope for a GOOD END but damn it all if I was not hooked on them and still cannot stop thinking about them!!
And unlike the Father’s, the Younger Sister’s and the Mother’s demons that were destroyed, Doris simply disappeared and unlike the others, she did not seem to want to hurt Ruby Lee, well, until the end when she turned into her mother to kill Ruby Like their younger brother was killed as a baby – Those monsters in the form of humans invaded their old home while the Father and the daughters were away and not only proceeded to rape the Mom but they took the young baby boy, put him in a sac and smashed him to death!
I kid you not!
Anyway, I am trying to say that I can totally see Doris come back if there ever were to be a second season, which I think there will, given that the antagonist was absent the whole last third of the movie, having been kidnapped by her crazed Crusher and thus her beef with our Family has not been resolved. While on the topic of that Antagonist, there is her husband’s story too, who is apparently gay, but we also learn of this fact way too late and of course the whole neighbour conflict that is the whole driving force here, so much is left to be resolved so I expect another season.
And I feel like I spoke more of the series than the ship but like I said, I wasn’t expecting it and since Doris is a Ghost/Demon and Ruby Lee has woken up from her stupidity, there seems to be nothing left to salvage but heh, Ruby Lee already knew that Doris wasn’t real before they kissed and while she is holding an Axe, it wasn’t for Doris and she never swung at her even once so…just maybe…I mean, there has been love between Demons and Humans before, right?
One can only dream…
