I am not sure whether to love this series for sticking to the rules and giving us a true horror ending (no happy end) or hate it for being true to the genre! Neither am I sure of whether to praise it for trying to give us yuri (implied and gospeled) or snarl at it for doing something that is so outdated in the current times, by telling but not showing us the yuri implied!
But before I get into that I have to confess that I only found out about this series just last week because I saw a trailer to a movie based on the same story coming out but which, other than the main character Bela, all other characters are different. Really, no surprise since everyone one died except Bela anyway.
But seeing this, has somewhat decreased my enthusiasm for the movie because now I know there is no happy end there as well! Oh well, we shall just have to watch it for just our girl Sakurada Hiyori (Shizuno in Saki ~ Side A drama). In this series though who we got was Otomo Karen (who played Ayari in Shinmai Shimai Series).
Her character is Shiori and is the one we are interested in the most , not only because she is the antagonist of the series but because she could have been so much relevant as in having her own harem of three girlfriends, if not more!
She died of course, because she was rotten to the core! That doesn’t stop me from shipping her though, even if she was playing with the other girls’ emotions every single time! First there Kozue, the reason that the new girl transfers to Shiori’s school. Kozue is dead already and it is all because of Shiori! She wanted to get revenge for what happened to her when they were young even though they were too young to know what was happening but Shiori wanted Kozue to feel her pain so she arranged for Kozue to be gang-raped!
Kozue wasn’t having it though so she jumped to her death rather than be defiled like that. But even though one would think that Shiori learned a huge lesson from that, she did not! Instead when Bela transferred to the school, she arranged for the same thing to happen to her that did Kozue. Little did she know that Bela came here with a purpose and that neither was she even human!
You see Bela is a monster, who is looking for a way to be a human so Kozue, who should have been dead but her Dad did some sciencing and repaired her body, though she doesn’t look the same, she makes a deal with Bela where she would give Bela her body if Bela helped her get revenge on those responsible for her not death!
One by one the revenge begins which is the moral of the story but in them as we get to each character, the past is revealed and it doesn’t take long, well, it takes to the end of the series, until we find out that it was all Shiori’s doing!
But here is the kicker, Shiori is so rotten that in her plot she played with feelings of one of the girls who was truly in love with her, Maria. She promised that she would kiss Maria if Maria did the deed that was to fall Kozue. You see Maria is like a legit gangster girl who also has a dark past but for her, she took that pain and made it hers by turning into the business that ruined her. She was the one that organized the group of men that were to do the sin to Kozue.
But that isn’t the worst part! No, Shiori had to betray Maria in the end and actually kill her while defending Bela, which did not make any kinds of sense! She and Bela were literally enemies. Shiori knew from the very start that something was wrong with Bela and she was afraid of her from the get go, also she knew that Bela was there for Kozue’s revenge! And yet she killed the girl that was willing to do anything for her, even kill, saving her enemy!!
Yeah, Shiori was the worst of the worst but even then, I still loved her fake relationships with both Kozue and Maria. She and Kozue were of course just friends, but really, not even that given that all through that time Shiori was planning her downfall.
Poor Maria on the other hand though. She had killed off any other emotion and was not afraid of anything except her feelings for Shiori, only for Shiori to betray her in the worst way possible!
Yeah, props for the horror element but I am still sad that Japan is still locked up in the closet when it comes to yuri content! Oh well, their time will come! And I will be here when it comes! One day we will get a honest to god yuri series or movie and we will celebrate!
Until then, we shall just have to settle for half-assed works I guess.
