“You are more than my Best Friend”
Ah young love, to be so innocent, so limitless, so exploratory, so single focused, so unbound…
I have had this movie since 2018 and I am still wondering why I have not written about it until now! At the time I guess I thought many would think it controversial but then I remembered who the fuck I am and what the movie is supposed to tell us and here we are!
First off, when I hear the term ‘Coming of Age’ one thing used to come to mind and that is the book ANN ON MY MIND! But now that novel seems so far off base compared to what I have seen since I read it and above it now there is already THE WORLD OF US, FINDING THE ADOLSCENCE and now, PORCUPINE LAKE!
This movie is a true ‘coming of age’ movie! I say true because it is just that, true and real! Seeing our girls Bea and Kate do those stupid things totally reminded me of the stupid things I did ion those early teens! Oh my God, did I do some stupid things…! Seriously, even watching Kate give Bea her favourite underwear as a gift, or even seeing the two kiss after calling each other sisters and friends or seeing them attempt at French kissing…Oh my God that was so funny! They literally took the ‘stick each other’s tongues in each other’s mouths’ so literally and I don’t know, I was laughing uncontrollably just watching them!
But even with that, they are just angels compared to the shit I did! I was eating things that weren’t food when I was 13…Yeah, I said what I said! So really, when I thought about that and then this movie I was like, what am I worried about?! Anyone who doesn’t like it or finds it uncomfortable hasn’t lived, or did not live at that age!
To summarise the story, Bea and her mother move to her father’s place as the two parents try to mend their relationship and things don’t really work out! That side of the story is already great for adults who will relate to that! But I and others here I hope, we came for a different side of the story and that is of Bea!
While the parents went through their own curve, Bea too went through hers and really, this is more of hers and Kate’s story than the parents! Heck, for the first time I see the two listed on IMDB first before their parents who are obviously more famous actors! I was shocked about that actually…
Anyway, Bea meets Kate, whose family has their own problems, really, compared to Kate’s family, Bea’s parents might as well be fighting over who will have the chocolate ice cream! Seriously, their problems made Bea’s family’s problems irrelevant…comparatively of course!
But again, we are interested in Kate and Bea’s story and there is really, as simple as a first love, well, no as simple but you get the message!
It was just too cute seeing them just going through this thing that they have no idea about and seeing Kate unknowingly court Bea was just…hanyan~ They were just too cute! But really, what got me was that their feelings were not trampled upon! There was no excuse for their feelings and there was no adult interference at all, which was a very welcome breath of fresh air!
The little hurdles that they came across were all of their own doing and the resolutions were all theirs as well! And it was all so believable! You could see girls their age do what they did! God, the more I think about this tory the more I love it!
But what confused me was the ending! At first I thought that Be and her Mom and Dad were leaving but they were actually not! But then Bea and Kate seemed like they were saying goodbye so someone was leaving but then the movie ended on a slightly older Bea back to their secret tree meaning that she is still around but Kate was no with her! Did Kate’s family leave instead then? That doesn’t make sense seeing as it didn’t seem like they were going anywhere in their life time!
But then there is that other part where while they seemed like they were saying goodbye, it wasn’t to their feelings, in fact it was like they were confessing right then and there! Yeah sure, many a couple have confessed while they were parting (unless you were MiaoMiao and Xiao Ai in MIAO MIAO >_>)
Any who, other than the ending being confusing, I really love this movie! And now that I think about that ending that had no kiss despite everyone watching expecting one, I was impressed by the little maturity the two showed in that they did not break in public! Were they just afraid? I doubt it but they never really ‘made out’ in public places, another one being at the titular lake where again it seemed like they were about to kiss but they didn’t, just like again at the hospital where it was just the two of them having another moment but again, they did not cave in, just like again, during their goodbye/confession scene!
Recommend? Of course I recommend it! It is just so pure! Pure love like this is very rare nowadays! We all need a bit of nostalgia to take us back to those times in our lives where we felt like were at the top of the world, a world we did not give a fuck about!
The young actors really did a good job and their personalities were so different from each other that they really showed the meaning of opposites attract! God, I am definitely watching this again after posting this! Yes, I just did two days ago but the love just keeps on flowing so…
Any who, that’s all…
