Would you kill someone you love?
Because of Love?

Before we get into that quote that every anime fan should know, let me first say something real quick…

OMFG Patricia Velasquez!!!!!???

How in the name of all that is holy am I just finding out about this movie?!!! It came out six years ago for crying out loud!! This one is by far one of my biggest fails in life!! Like, how the heck did I miss this?!! Yeah sure it is a Venezuela movie, another first one for me, but from the looks of things, I am sure it was popular when it came out in the community so how the fuck did I miss it?!! Patricia was my first ever crush when I saw her in The Mummy movies as Anck-Su-Namun! I crushed on her before I even knew who Jennifer Connelly was (another of my young crushes)!

Fail of epic proportions BG, FAIL!!

Enough about beating myself up over spilt milk though! Let’s talk Liz in September!

This one is two of movies I watched last night and they were both hard hitters! Hard hitters as in they will break your fuckin heart by the end but you will love them forever and ever because sometimes pain is good! In this case better in fact! The other movie kind of left things with a bit of ambiguity and it was up to the viewer to decide what went down but here, things are pretty clear cut and sometimes transparency is miles better!

Apparently the story is adapted from a stage play, which I haven’t read as the price on that thing is out right madness! But I am pretty sure that only core concepts were taken and largely expanded upon! First off since the movie was almost moulded to fit Patricia’s real life, is a dead giveaway that there were major changes! Also reading the reviews of the play make it out to be more comedic and while there were a few laughs in the movie, it was more drama and romance than rom-com!

Long story short, Eva and her husband are planning on a vacation getaway but for reasons Eva has to go first and her husband was to follow her later. On her way her car breaks down (first time Fate interferes) and she is forced to stop in a small town. But all hotels are full so she is sent to live at a nearby lodge (I see you Fate).

The lodge is mostly, no, fully occupied by Lesbian women which was why the owner at first almost refused to let Liz stay. But since it was for only one night and she was sent by a friend, the owner let her stay! Things of course move on from there ad Fate keeps getting its nose in Liz and Eva’s business (breaking down Eva’s car…again, and giving Liz the same disease that killed Eva’s son)!

Just last post I mentioned things that I usually love in my movies. One of them was the fact that one of the women is straight to start but ends up gay. Better yet, when the straight woman has a boyfriend or in this case, a husband! Now, I am all for love but if it this is done wrong, I mean the girl winning the girl in the battle of love, I usually end up hating it!

But here it was inevitable, and not just in the ‘they are soulmates’ kind of Mary sue inevitable! When the movie begins you already know there is trouble in paradise but even then Eva doesn’t seem like someone ready to get back to her husband for cheating on her (he had a different child with another woman).

You see their lives were already fucked when they lost their son to cancer! And in fact they break up before Eva and Liz hook up so really, there was no ‘cheating’ on Eva’s part! Before they break up though, Eva has sex with him and this will come into play later.

But the best thing about this movie is how well written it is! The dialogue is so smart and you get the feeling of satisfaction after the movie ends because not only does it feed you visually, but mentally through dialogue! What was best about it was how it played into the two’s lives!

For example there is this conversation about Liz’s life where she says that she has problems where she dumps people she sees as soon as they fall in love with her. But she says that was cured! Then she says there is one thing that wasn’t cured and that is her falling for the wrong people, when she does fall in love!

As we see, this is cured of her because for the first time, she has fallen for the right person! Only, Fate is cruel in that it is also her punishment because that cure comes at the end of her life! She literally only gets three months to enjoy it!

Then there was that time in bed where she asked Eva if Love can heal! She was of course talking about her cancer! In a way, love did heal her! She did not get to that worst stage of cancer and it was because of Eva! We will get to that in a moment!

Then on Eva’s side of things, when her son was sick and on his dying bed, she was so afraid that she did not even hold his hand in his last moments! That was such a traumatising moment for her! But as if to punish her too for that moment, her soulmate is also wrought with the same exact disease! Worse, it was nearing its last stages!

So as you can imagine, anyone would think that Eva would bail as that would be too much! Almost like a cosmic joke, were she to find out that Liz also had cancer and thus would leave her like her son did! In addition to that, were she to stay and Liz was to get to that stage where she was bed-ridden, would she be able to handle it this time unlike with her son?

But two great things happened with this. First, Eva found out about the sickness before Liz told her! In fact she found out when they had not gotten together so she had all the time in the world to get away. Liz also thought that Eva did not know even when they hooked up.

But Eva stayed! Despite what it all meant, she chose to stay and love Liz! And when Liz was bed ridden, this time she did hold her hand, unlike that time she couldn’t her son’s. All that despite the situation with Liz being much worse than her son’s death! Because you see, Liz refused to go through with the chemotherapy. She went through that already and it was no worth it to go through again since the first time did not help and there was no guarantee she would survive this next one.

And so Liz chose to spend her capable time left with Eva. She made that decision with Eva and Eva helped her leave the hospital! But that wasn’t the only impossible responsibility Eva had to deal with. You see Liz asks her to do the un-thinkable! She asks Eva to kill her before she reached the final stage of cancer where she would have no choice but to be bed-ridden till her death!

“Would you kill the one you love because of love?”

So now you see why I was quoting Ga-rei Zero!

Heavy stuff, huh!

And that, is another one of the things I love in my movies! I love movies where people come into each other’s lives and change them significantly, and for the better! Those are always the best stories I find!

But there is another hidden gem in this movie that also hits home! You see Liz had a kind of ‘shaman’ friend who volunteered to help Liz with her condition! Now of course, unless she was a witch one had to roll their eyes at the implication that some mixture of natural herbs would cure cancer!

At first of course Liz turns down the offer! It seems it wasn’t the first time she was asked too. But in the end she goes. What changes her mind? Eva appearing in her life of course! And so she goes and the woman does something as Liz tells her of her constant dreams she keeps having! One of these dreams comes into play towards the end but it is speculative but I choose to believe it!

You see, I don’t think the woman was out to cure Liz! While the movie was too grounded, I still believe that what she did was in fact something completely different for Liz. I believe she made it so Liz would get re-incarnated.

And so enter that mentioned fact that Eva had sex with her husband before leaving him!

Actually, she had left him before they had even gotten into that car to go back home! You see, Eva left her wedding ring back at the lodge with a book as a gift for Liz! So you see Eva had already made up her mind of leaving her husband and while I don’t know if the having sex part and leaving him in the middle of the journey was well planned ahead or a spur of the moment, it did happen non the less!

During that sex Eva got pregnant and she does tell Liz about it later when they are officially together. Eva says that if it is a girl, she will name her after Liz, which she does though she calls her Lizzy not Liz. But really, it can shortened so…

Interestingly, while both Eva and her husband were pretty light skinned, Lizzy was more like Liz and Coqui or the other women there at the lodge! More interestingly, Lizzy loved water so much, almost like Liz did! She was only like 5 or 6 but she was not afraid of jumping into the ocean by herself!

Almost like she had Liz’s spirit!

One of those dreams Liz had you see, were of being underwater by herself and the way Lizzy went into that ocean all alone is almost like Liz had a promotion of her future reincarnated life!

Too deep? I apologise!

So yeah, I love this movie so much! The fact that Patricia is in it and playing a lesbian is just icing on that delicious cake! And the women in this movie, they are all such great character and so shippable! I have to confess I shipped Liz and Coqui quite a bit and if we had gotten a different ending, of Evan ending up leaving, I so would have had them as my OTP!

But thankfully, we were spared the predictable and disappointing endings and instead we got one of the best ones! Yea sure, it would have probably been better if Liz did not die but someone that would have lessened the story’s perfection!

Almost perfect score for this one and I so recommend it!
