Italy be like, Oi~, We’re here too you know!!
Believe us Italy, we know!
What I don’t know is why I haven’t realized it until now but there is a war brewing in the Netflix world!! Seems like every country from all corners of the world wants in on the action! First, Thailand struck with The Stranded! Then Mexico with Diablero! Then Brazil with Spectros! America was like, Hello there, our entry is I am Not Okay With This! And now Italy wants in on the action too with Luna Nera!
Interestingly all the mentioned series overlap genre-wise! And I don’t mean with the gayness! Obviously they are all gaysome but I mean the supernatural kind! Japan and South Korea feel like the odd men out, which is weird! They should have been first on this list! Though, maybe if we include Sion Sono’s Vampire Hotel Series then Japan actually struck first way back in 2017!
What I am trying to say is that we are being fed really good! Gone are the days where yuri was just shoujo-ai and even then it was a stretch and some catch, like having to burry your gays in the end or something! Though I guess with Spectros and Luna Nera partly here, we are still not 100% looked after seeing as some of those age old problems still exist!
Just as usual, I of course fell for the wrong ship this time around, like I am prone to doing, and once I fall for a ship, that’s it! Even if it sinks, I go down with it, even if there is another viable, and healthier option, which in fact, is the case here with Luna Nera actually!
You see, we have two options here, well, some will argue there is only one option and the other is just wishful thinking but by the end of episode two, I am 100% sure there were two sides of shippers, one side shipping Tebe/Leptis and the other Ade/Persepolis!
Guess which one I am on, to those who have already seen the series…Ade/Persepolis of course, because why? I am a goddamn train wreak, that’s why!! Of course I would fall for the ship that doesn’t pan out, but let me tell you all naysayers right now, you all are gonna be eating your words in the second season! Especially seeing as the ‘canon’ ship Tebe and Leptis are like oil and fire!
And I am gonna say it right now and get it out of the way before I forget to mention it (yeah right, like I would ever forget that scene!) Ade and Persepolis had the best goddamn scene in the whole damn series and that’s a goddamn fact!! You all who have seen the series know which scene I am talking about!
Those who haven’t, think back to The Handmaiden’s Libido Award Winning Bath scene! Ade and Persepolis’ scene was that level of hot! Like for fucks sakes, if anyone did not turn gay from just witnessing that scene I don’t wanna talk to you! And if we observers felt like that, how the hell did Ade or Persepolis come out of that scene even remotely straight?!!
Sense fuckin where?!!
Seriously, even the song that was playing in the background was gay as all hell! Like, I don’t even…Yeah sure, Tebe and Leptis made out and all that stuff and they were known to the coven while Ade and Persepolis have boyfriends, well, they did, but those Ade and Persepolis scenes were just…I don’t even know what the fuck happened in that production room!
Seriously, I can’t these two not happening later down the road! This first season they were stupid girls blinded by love but their crushes were just not meant to be, interestingly mirroring Ade’s mother and the man she was in love with first who turned out to be the big bad having betrayed the coven and killed Ade’s mother and Tebe’s mentor! He went on to start a cult that hunted down witches and burned them alive!
The current Leader of these witch hunters is the father of Ade’s no longer boyfriend, who killed Ade’s grandmother, well, her mother, I will explain soon so when in the end Ade finally came out as a witch to her boyfriend, who is a witch hunter, then she learned of everything, yeah, there is no way that love is happening!!
So, when Ade’s mother was about to have her second child, she disappeared and when she came back, she was an old lady carrying Ade’s young brother (not brother actually, again, I will explain) and so Ade’s only thought of as her grand mother who had brought her up all these years but it was actually her mother who had cast a spell so strong it drained her of nearly half her life force!
The spell? It was to conceal Ade’s brother’s real identity! You see Valente, Ade’s brother, was actually born a girl but in order to hide her identity and other reasons we soon find out, their mother cast a sex-changing spell which turned Valente into a boy! Sadly, that did not stop his gift as his power still spilled out in a form of him sleep walking and drawing ominous pictures!
You see, there is a prophecy of the chosen one being born to bring balance to the world and throughout the series, Tebe and the coven think that chosen one is Ade, given that she too had incredible power!
Speaking of her power, it was actually almost the same as Carla’s in Spectros! She could hear the dead too though hers is much more than that. She could also see those that were to soon die, almost prophecy-like. Which is kind of frightening when you think of the possibilities that were she to get stronger, she might even start deciding people’s fates when they might die and how!
*shivers*
But that‘s not all the similarities between the two series, in this one too, the witches exists as door keepers to the world of the dead fearing of the time when the dead will walk the earth and destroy it. Sounds familiar?
In the end, the drawings Valente was drawing came to pass of the eclipse that cancelled the spell put on him and thus turning him back into a girl and finally fully awakening to her power, which was exponentially stronger than Ade’s! She was the chosen one, not Ade!
Meanwhile, when we think back, Ade used to have these dreams of her dark self! We should have paid attention because her jealousy over Valente turns her dark, which, if she was a child of that betrayer from her mother’s time in the Lost Cities (home of the witches), then she inherited his darkness and soon the fight will be between Ade and Valente!
*Chills*
So you see, as a story, Luna Nera is already interesting but with 6 episodes, 6 freakin episodes only!!! There is much left to explain and of course you know I will be there for second servings, especially to see where Ade and Persepolis go, given that their straight romances are rendered futureless now! Ade turned evil and if the hunters did not have a reason to hunt her down before, now they do! And she is no longer under the protection of the coven and Valente so shit is gonna hit the fan quick!
That and Dick is now the leader of the hunters after his father was killed by the witches! So that road is closed and I don’t see Persepolis sticking with hers too seeing as they were buddies with the now new leader of the hunters!
So, as far as I am concerned, season one was planting the seeds for Ade and Persepolis and they gave them a chance to taste some straight romance, which turned out to be disastrous. Meanwhile Tebe and Leptis are constantly at each other’s throats with Leptis doubting Tebe’s decisions left right and center! That is not a healthy relationship either! Really, I don’t know why Tebe didn’t date Janara in the first place! She is far better choice that Leptis and connect better! Probably the childhood friend thing or something! Sigh, where is Japan when you need them! Childhood friends always get the upper hand!
Anyway, Ade and Persepolis were just too cute and extremely shippable, even as they had boyfriends, which was annoying to be sure but even that did not take away from that Bath scene! Nay, even the Horse scene was just too pure to be outdone by some heteroism! They went from enemies to friends to bossom buddies and if that isn’t a road to something ,I don’t know what is! I will just think of them still being unknown to the power of gay, which they will soon awaken to, having had a taste of it during that bath scene!
Seriously, that scene deserves an award! Sadly, it is too extreme to share all the caps of it so you will have to watch it yourselves for complete glory.
God, that was so so good! And now I can’t get it out of my head! Time to revisit that episode now it seems!
Sigh
PS: The actor who plays Ade, Nina Fotaras, is so goddamn hot! Like, there is a law against that level of hotness hot!!!! Whoa!
Ja!
