Part 2 – Rey and Abigail
So back to the YouTube original ORIGIN, for starters I need to apologise. In the Part1 post I said something about ORIGIN being the first YouTube series, but it actually is not. There was already another named Impulse, which I had actually already watched but totally forgot about. Someone on Twitter recommended it to me after seeing the other post and upon re-watching it, I found that I had already seen it!
Just as ORIGIN ended on an interesting note, so did Impulse where Henry and Jenna’s relationship is concerned! They had gotten so close towards the end and Jenna had this interesting conversation with Henry about her first time having sex, with a guy she never sees again after the fact, in fact, and who she clearly dumped for Henry when he asked her to eat with him at lunch.
Jenna told Henry that she did not feel at all wow’d by her first sexual encounter. It just felt…kind of nice she said. I mean, despite what we know, well, some of us know, happens during that first time, there is no denying that it is one experience one never forgets about and yet book worm Jenna, who has even never *cough* explored by herself, didn’t think of her first experience as anything to gush about!
I mean, come on, we all are thinking the same thing!
And so that, with Henry and Jenna getting closer and Henry and her Mom deciding to stay with Jenna and her Dad, which means that Henry and Jenna might end up being real step sisters down the road, I had high hopes for season 2! But it’s been ages and not a whisper! This worries me and not only for Impulse but for ORIGIN!
And there I go again, going off the deep end! I really need medication for my condition of getting off topic every damn time!
So anyway, ORIGIN. I decided to leave this ship for Part2 because it is in the realm of subtext! But if you have been around as long as some of us have, since the birth of the term (with XENA, in case you did not know where the term SUBTEXT came from) you know not to take it lightly! This is the term that most represents the REY/ABIGAIL ship!
And just like Henry and Jenna in Impulse have a hurdle of future sisterhood to get over in future seasons, Rey and Abigail have quite a bit too but the most prominent, to the viewers anyway, is the age gap! Abigail is 18 and Rey is like in her late 20s or even early 30s. But to me this is no big deal, because the show already told me it was not a big deal already! The other hurdle would be that Rey, as I mentioned in Part 1, had a boyfriend, and even though he is dead, she was quite attached to him to the point of having a panic attack when she saw him all cut up (they were looking at the life-form in his brain) but of course that hurdle was also thrown away by the end of the series.
Another hurdle that might or might not be that important is Abigail having a secret crush on the Doctor (the guy taking care of an injured Rey with Abigail’s help). But I trust my senses and they haven’t given off warning bells yet in regards to the two. There was this moment where a rift came up between him and Rey and Abigail chose Rey’s side so that hurdle can be forgotten, if they don’t get back to it in Season 2 for drama, that is!
But let’s explain the first two hurdles. The age hurdle as I said was taken care of by the show. So the crew, or some of them, are totally smashed. They are playing that ‘I’ve Never’ game and in it we find out that Rey slept with a teacher before! And not only that but the teacher was a woman! YES A WOMAN! As she so makes it clear to everyone. Her reasons? She was hot! Well dear Rey, you are hot too and there is an 18 year old girl there who has already impacted your life in more ways than your boy friend did but hey, and she might have a soft crush on you but hey, who am I to say!
But with that revelation, Rey’s side is super clear for approach and it is not all on Abigail’s side to be clarified! Because you see, out of all the people still alive by the end, Abigail is the only one we don’t know anything about! Her back story and why she ended up on the ORIGIN was the only one not shown! Heck, even the dead had their back story like the very own Lee from Part 1! Meanwhile one of the guys got to have two episodes of back story, like, what the heck is that all about?!
And it is Abigail that is the most intriguing out of all of them! First of all she is too young to be a part of these ‘volunteers’ who all seem to be outcasts or even lawbreakers. Secondary, for someone so young she sure has a high tolerance for blood and violence. In addition to that, her stitching job, which saved Rey’s life BTW, was not quite the armature job. Heck, even the Doctor looked impressed! She is also too nice! Not only does she know how to cook too, but she would serve every person their food like she was the chef of the ship or something! Think Neelix from Star Trek Voyager!
Like she is the most mysterious character here and we know nothing about her outside of ORIGIN! I am pretty sure it was intentional to leave her backstory out! I want that second season if only to learn more about her! I feel like she is quite an important player in the grand scheme of things and add in the fact that there is something brewing between her and Rey, well, that second season could not come any time sooner even if it tried!
So anyway, subtext! The devil is in the details with this ship and I love my details! The first being that it was because of Abigail that the crew were able to find Rey in the first place! Had they missed her that time, she would have definitely been dead! I mean it was kind of Fate-like, there Abigail stood, taking in everything while her comrades moved on ahead of her. Those few seconds of standing there were enough for something to drip onto her face from above. She examines what had dripped on her and it is blood! Looking up there is a body laying down bleeding severely! That is how they find Rey!
Next comes the examination after the finding. She and the Doctor stay to take care of her while the others go to attend to a scream they heard! During this Abigail comforts a badly hurt Rey in a way I have never seen strangers comfort as equally hurt people! Like, literally these people have only just met each not even a few hours prior and Abigail was cuddling and comforting Rey like they were related or something! Seriously, look at the caps!! The devil in the details dear Readers, the details!
Skipping a bit further along and Abigail and the Doctor have managed to take Rey to the medical centre, and speaking of which, these two passed like three men on their way and no one even offered to take over for Abigail, who was obviously struggling to hold up Rey with the Doctor but then again, I wonder if she would have accepted the help!
Anyway in the medical centre, it is funny how it is also Abigail who does the saving! First she gives Rey the relaxants she needs to bring down her high blood pressure that’s heating up her body. Then when the Doctor gets the jitters and can’t do the sticking with his hands shaking like mad, it is Abigail who does the stiches to close the wound and thus stopping the bleeding! In addition to that, she also stays behind to look after Rey while the Doctor goes off to help the others with something!
By this point we know something is wrong and once again Abigail is about to save Rey’s life a third time! Rey is running out of oxygen but the thanks are outside the room and going out is bad bad mojo! But Rey is suffocating so Abigail goes out to grab an extra gas tank but when she gets back inside, she is knocked out! Like, we are only two and half episodes in and Abigail has already played hero to Rey three times! And speaking of details, when the Doctor and the others left her alone with Rey, there is this moment where she seemed to be debating with herself if she should or shouldn’t but then ended up doing it anyway, which was to walk over to an unconscious Rey and caress her face like she had done that time Rey was bleeding in her arms! Like, how not to ship!!!
From there on things pick up normally until we get to the drinking episode (6) and Rey finally drops the bomb! Actually before that Rey finds out finally that it was Abigail that saved her life when she was talking to the Doctor, first to apologise for her going off on him when she found her boyfriend’s body and secondary to thank him for saving her life! But the Doctor sets her straight saying that it was actually Abigail that saved her, by stitching her up, but really, it was more than just the stitching I would argue!
Anyway, it was right there that Rey starts to really think of Abigail and it is this episode that see that ship and we are now on Rey’s side of things in this relationship, which sees us to all the way to the end! During the drinking scene, Rey confesses that it is her fault that the others are all stuck on this ship alone while everyone else got evacuated. Because her boyfriend was in danger she disobeyed protocol and instead of going to wake up and evacuate the citizens she was in charge of, she instead ran off to her boyfriend’s section, which had bit hit by the asteroid that carried the parasite and thus not only let the parasite out by opening that section up but she left her charges to be left behind and not evacuated!
As we learn she got injured badly by her boyfriend who had gotten infected and could not go back to help her charges escape! Understandably everyone was kind of pissed at her, especially the Doctor, who had taken lots of shit and blame until that point when it was all Rey that was responsible all this time!
But that is not the interesting part! What is interesting is that Abigail did not react like the others! She did not get up and leave Rey alone like the others! She instead stayed there right next to her where she had been sitting beside the pool. Even more interesting is the fact that Rey was telling this truth to Abigail and while the others were obviously in listening distance and heard her, she spoke as if she was speaking only to Abigail. Really, I actually expected Abigail to be the one to freak out the most but she did not even give a visible reaction, other than that confused look at the beginning when Rey said it was all her fault!
I mean she did cry and look distraught but that was the condition she was in before the drinking when she lost it and as she says, she had almost forgot for just a minute! She had almost forgot the nightmare she is living in. Let’s not forget she is only 18. But there was no negative reaction towards Rey after her coming clean and as I said she stayed there with her!
This moment here told me all I needed to know, that nothing is coming between this two again, if this didn’t do the trick. Maybe the truth of Abigail will in the next season but I kind of doubt it. Meanwhile all after this, the two started to get quite physical actually and we started to see a softer side of Abigail, finally acting her age. Like when the crew is split I couples to reflect in sad moments, Rey and Abigail are together. When something bad happens and there’s blood, Abigail now reacts normally as she looks away in disgust and horror and Rey in the meantime is there to comfort her and give her a shoulder to hide in!
Another awesome moment happened during this comforting. The crew is out to hunt the latest host of the virus but Abigail has had enough or violence so she decides to stay behind. Rey volunteers to stay with her! Guess where they end up going? That special place that Rey and her boyfriend had their first date! That beautiful are where they can watch the sun in all its deadly glory! Rey takes Abigail here too!!! Like, talk about pulling out all the stops! The implications of this are too much to count but sadly the scene itself was disappointing! They did not even get to talk about something much more personal to connect them farther! It was just the fact that Rey stayed to comfort Abigail and that she brought her to this lovely place, that was all gotten from this! But I guess I should be happy that all we got happened anyway. I am sure it will pay off in the end!
But then came the main dish!!!
I doubt anyone that knows me doesn’t know but I get lots of visitors and most of them might be new so I am going to say it again…The simple gesture of holding hand give me a lot more happy feelings than seeing a couple kiss or even have sex! Don’t ask me to explain because I can’t but if you have seen a lot of emphasis placed on caps of hand-holding, this is why! The more meaningful the gesture is to the couple, the bigger the impact it has on me!
For Rey and Abigail, this impact is sky high! First of all they hadn’t held hands at all before this! Not with someone else and definitely not with each other! The scene itself too and the conditions of they why of it all, makes this all the more important in the grand scheme of things! So, the situation first! The show is almost over! There is a big decision that is made! There is a way to get off the ship and down to the planet of their destination but there is only place for two people! All those that were on the main deck including Rey and Abigail, decided that they would let the other two closest to the shuttle take it and escape and the rest would stay behind!
Staying behind meant certain death as they were running out oxygen! But they knew their fate and it wasn’t a good one! So, they know their days are numbered and it is during this depressing period that Rey turns sideways to look at Abigail beside her. Rey’s facial expression softens, and a small smile breaks out on her face. She moves closer to Abigail and reaches out! Abigail feeling a light touch looks down to her hand and we see Rey’s reaching out to her, first with a pinkie then fully taking Abigail’s hand in hers. They look at each other. Rey gives her a soft smile. Still holding hands they turn to the screen before them!
You damn well know what you were doing showrunners!!! They frikkin put emphasis on that hand scene and there is no misinterpretations about it! That was the green light for the go ahead and ship these two for sure! Damn it, they had to stop the season at this point of course because damn it, they need us to return for the next season and you know we are going to be there!
Like, these types of relationship developments are very rare and since they are my favourite cup of tea, you might imagine how slowly I suffer when I have to wait for Lord knows how long for the relationship to continue! I really have high hopes for these YouTube Original shows and if this is a trend that is going to continue on in their future projects, count me a YouTube stan right now! I really can’t wait for Rey and Abigail’s development and on the flip side, henry and Jenna’s too!
Anyway, I think this is enough reading and if you haven’t seen the show yet, get to it! I recommend this one 100%! Not only do we have a real lesbian couple in Lee and Ayko, but we have a definitive subtext and definitely incoming ship in Rey and Abigail! Seriously, this show has it all! Add in that delicious dose of horror in Sci-Fi space and this is one show made for the mutuals!
Anyway, here are all the caps galore!
