Now for something a little bitter sweet, since you know, the real world isn’t all sunshine and roses! One can ignore reality for so long before either facing it or it eats them alive and as our main girl Alma showed strength with her choice at the end of the movie despite being so young (no hair down there yet! How do I know this? This is that kind of movie), I couldn’t ignore this one too!

This, being a short movie from a famous Mexican Film School CCC and thus it is in Spanish but fear not, it is on YouTube, with English subtitles too so no worries!

Despite seeing it four times in a row though, I am still confused by this short film! I can’t seem to work out the timeline! For some reason I don’t think that it is as linear as it first appears to be! I have a feeling that some events we see later actually are flashbacks and thus come before the earlier scenes, but for the life of me I just can’t seem to place them! For example, during the earlier (bedroom) scenes, it seems as if Alma knows something (something that happens later – in sequence, at school).

And while the difference in colour of the grapes tells of a different time, despite happening after said scene at school the reactions from both Alma and Ileana are the same so you can’t be sure that they either happened before the scene or after the scene!

Later when Alma finally breaks down, seemingly in the right point in time, the current time, we get a flashback to the grape scenes which makes my brain hurt even more! And so I am not even going to try and tackle that. Let’s talk of how I perceive the story in general…

Alma is most of all of us! Most of us have been there in her shoes! I have been there! That time when your hormones got the best of you and any little action that is questionable by your friend is taken the wrong way by your brain. Where to your friend it is a simple unconscious action, your body reacts to it like it was some kind of seduction move!

it never helps that your friend is a bit older than you, more ‘grown up’, totally attractive and sexy and you are scrawny and have no other friends and this friend somehow seems out to get you and you fight but eventually you give in and then it is the end of you!

Poor Alma, it really came off as if Ileana was seducing her with actions like; sliding her hand over her thigh to grab a bowl of grapes, or placing her foot right in your inner thigh, all of this with that sexy ass smile of hers that is like a thousands suns beaming down on you!

Then the accidental touches while playing, usually at the tickle game (the tickle game never ends well!!) because your hands take a mind of their own and start roaming in areas that they should not be but while for my it ended badly, here Alma got it worse because Ileana just smiled at her then gave her a heartfelt hug, followed up by a wet kiss on her cheek! The poor girl was being thrown hooks and her resistance was running out!

Seriously, it is easy to take her side here when you watch the film yourselves because it really seems as if Ileana is seducing the life out of her! I mean for crying out loud, she showed Alma her V during the hair down there conversation where Ileana all but pulled her undies aside to show Alma her hair and you bet Alma saw more than some natural hair colour checker!

And so it is not surprising when Alma finally makes that move of confessing your love by giving some special gift to your friend that almost always ends badly! Again for Alma it was worse because while I and many more usually get turned down to te face, and in turn losing the friend and in turn not ever entertaining such thoughts until you have grown up a little more, Ileana did not react negatively to this obvious show of affection! She accepted the gift and even gave Alma a kiss on the forehead as a reward and since they never had the talk it is still up in the air!

Why I am saying that Alma got it worse is that she is in the dead zone! Just before she gave that present to Ileana, she had caught her making out with a guy in the toilets and not only that, but Ileana gave the guy head! Despite acting o innocent with Alma, Ileana was already that far in the game! She very well knew what she was doing! Which makes the scenes before even more confusing! Was she actually seducing poor Alma all that time fully knowing what emotions her actions would evoke?!

And so Alma got super confused and started making dumb decisions a reaction to what she had discovered, like going to her neighbour’s boy she had never spoken to before and making out with him probably to get back at Ileana or something which made no sense since Ileana would not know of it unless Alma told her but anyway she found out soon after what a dumb action that was and in addition finally coming to terms with her sexuality because what she chose to do after means that she definitely did not like the conclusion she had come to!

What she did was trying to commit suicide! There is only one reason that a girl might try to kill herself after making out with a guy that she approached herself and forced herself on him! She confirmed that she was gay, she was so gay for Ileana, she was rainbow levels, dick hating  levels of gay!

And so she put stones in the jacket she was wearing and jumped into the swimming pool to drown herself!

At this moment seeing as the movie was ending I expected two things to happen! One and my most favoured was that Ileana would come to her rescue and we would have either a HAPPY END or ambiguous end as the screen would turn black without the two speaking a word to each other! The other ending would be that Alma would die DEAD! But somehow none of those things happened because Alma came out to the surface herself! This is the first time I have seen this outcome where a person chooses to cancel their suicide despite the lack of a reason for them to!

I was actually pretty moved by this decision! Alma is pretty young like I said. So for her to choose to live with the pain, to face the reality of things at such an age is really the stuff of inspiration and a show of true human strength! And the more I think of it the more I think that she made the right decision! Ileana never said she did not love her! In fact everything she did seemed to show the contrary! Chances are high that next time she met Ileana and they talked, really talked, chances are she would win i the end! Despite being a bit older Ileana too was still young so maybe she was not 100% sure what she was doing too and maybe that talk would finally show her DE WEI!

Whatever the case, the actual ending was semi! As soon as Alma came up from the water the screen dipped to black and the credits rolled! But it wasn’t like they ran away from the grim ending that it could have been! I mean this is a film where they are talking about pubes and underage girls giving blow jobs so a simple death is the least of their worries!

Which is why I am still surprised by that decision and I love this short that much more and respect it for that choice!
