Kuzu no Honkai クズの本懐

That’s right, Miyu-chan just kissed another girl within the span of one post! And yes, this is the drama, not the anime! I might or might not be checking the anime out it all depends on what happens in the drama! I already have a feeling where the show is going to end up but like I said, I am trying to get back to my glass-half-full old self so before I am either proved right or wrong with the next episode, I have decided to write about the first two episodes that I have watched.

Verdict so far? If my gut feeling is proved wrong as the series progresses, then Japan is going to get the props for starting off 2017 in style and maybe even winning it in the long run! There are already a couple of movies I am waiting to hit the shelves that look promising this year so things are looking up for Japan. Don’t ruin this one, okay?

Like I said, the anime is also currently airing and if I am not mistaken, it is probably at around episode 8 or so. The drama is on episode 4 as far as I am aware but I have watched the first two episodes only. Each episode is sadly 24min which might mean that we might get the full 12, maybe? Either way, I am going to continue watching until I am inevitably let down or proved wrong, then I will marathon the anime!

So, what is this thing exactly that I am thinking will happen? Well, going with what popped into my head first, this has ‘Last Friends’ vibes written all over it! And by that I mean in the fate of our lovely couple in Hanabi (Miyu-chan) and Sanae (Sarii)! The other is this feeling I usually get when I connect to the yuri force! Here’s what is what…

So, our main characters are together and everyone thinks of them as the perfect couple! But all is not as it seems. What is actually going on is that they are in a fake relationship! Even as they kiss and make-out all they are thinking of is their actual person that they love! Hanabi, played by X21’s one and only Captain Yoshimoto Miyu, is actually in love with her brother, a brother who is in a relationship with another teacher who, the main male character is also in love with! They both know each other’s secret but they still put on the façade and even have rules of dating!

Knowing that, you know very well what is going to happen here in the end! Hanabi has zero chance of actually ending up with her brother and if they are going that route, then chances of the main male character being with the teacher has little chance of happening, but then again, that is less of a taboo than Hanabi’s situation so…But anyway this is only if what we all are thinking is going to happen does not and that is that Hanabi and the main male character are going to end up developing real feelings for one another in the end!

Really, even a middle-schooler can see this coming a mile away! And so this is why I am very sensitive going into future episodes, especially since we are only on episode 2 and the yuri has already hit the fan! Things can’t go on this smoothly for the rest 10 or so episodes, it is impossible!

Which is why I have decided to post about these first two while I am still feeling the butterflies, before I get disappointed by later episodes because I wanted to wait until Hanabi and Sanae became an actual thing, like I would do usually! With that out of the way, let’s get this party started….

Alright, apologies for the sudden nope imagery but I just had to share my surprise at this! This is an Idol, right?! I mean she is the Captain and Center of X21 and essentially their Face so for her to go this far, like, Jesus! Yeah, I know X21 is kind of different from other Idol groups in that it is actually made up of Models (They are selected from Junior Models) and they are under an actress Agency (That has Gouriki Ayame-sama in it) but still! But moving on to the point at hand, the ship that matters – Hanabi and Sanae! Though I think it is too soon for us to be at this level already, I understand them trying to move things along and follow the original timeline. I know that but still! We barely got to spend time with Sanae in episode one, all we got from her is that she is a stalker that might be in love with the main character and is jealous of Hanabi and him!

Then suddenly we find out that she and Hanabi and friends, despite not having seen them even exchange a smile! Suddenly we are thrown into their friendship that was nowhere to be seen in episode 1! I mean, come on! At least begin with the two doing friendship things before you throw us into the main couple! This way when Sanae pulls a stalker, there is even a bigger punch in the gut instead of coming off really creepily just stalking people when no one knows who she is!

And then when we get to see the two together finally, things are already moving into high gear! They are going on shopping dates, Sanae is showing disturbing behaviour already as she starts and drops serious conversations, all having to do with the main Dude! Like, give us a break! They did indeed give us one but it lasts only as long as Hanabi and the Guy try to once more make out while thinking of other people, just like what they always do when together (seriously, go do something romantic like, a walk in the park or something FFS)! Every time they meet they end up making out like they are depending on this skinship to survive or something!

Which is why I hoped that Sanae would give us an actual relationship when she was introduced and she was making Hanabi smile for once but then Hanabi had to invite her for a sleep over and having seen some caps of the anime on 4chan, I was ready to blow up! This is too fast! I wanted at least Hanabi and Sanae to have a slow burn normal intimacy! Leave the rushing to the Dude!

Now, I know that even if we are only getting into it, Sanae has had these feelings for Hanabi for a long time, as she will tell Hanabi soon, but come on! We the audience don’t know that, unless you are assuming that we have seen the anime the TV show is based on and read the manga the anime adapted from! I have not done either, which is why this pacing feels all wrong!

Now of course to those who have, they will know what is going on and even anticipate it unlike us. They will also feel for poor Sanae when Hanabi started bombarding her with questions about this person that she loves! Sanae looked about ready to break so being cornered like that, while in a dark room alone together with Hanabi, in the same bed with the girl she has had a crush on since, Lord knows when, so close, so curious, so out of will power to resist the temptation anymore…

It was inevitable that Sanae would finally crack and let her over-flowing feelings finally spill free! It is not right to blame Hanabi here actually. She was not the usual oblivious heroines that do these things and make you want to slap them around! No, Hanabi’s situation was understandable. She wanted to know if there was a different view on love! All she knows of love is suffering; loving someone who does not love you, having to bear those feelings and not being able to do anything about them, either getting rid of them or sharing them! She wanted so know if Sanae’s love was different from her own, if it was the good kind of love!

Unfortunately, or is it fortunately, it turned out that Sanae’s love was equally as painful as hers, when Sanae told her the person that she is in love with. She did this by bending forward and kissing those no longer irresistible lips of Hanabi’s. What surprised me the most is the reaction from Hanabi. I am not sure if it was on the actress and the director but the fact that Hanabi actually returned the kiss instead of instantly jerking away! It wasn’t until Sanae pulled her mouth away from Hanabi’s did Hanabi finally show the expected reaction of sitting up with surprised eyes!

What was that like?! Was it a mistake or was it in the script?! Actually this is the second time that Sanae has produced new feelings from Hanabi. The first were the real smiles she showed when talking to Sanae. She seemed happier when with her than when she is with the main Dude. Like, watch that scene in class carefully where Hanabi invites Sanae to her home. When the Dude comes over and Hanabi has to cancel walking home with Sanae, she loses her happiness like she is waking up from a wonderful dream and into cruel reality! When they are in Hanabi’s room, she is also really happy!

Now here, with the kiss, Sanae once again made Hanabi show us another wonderful rare emotion which was complete surprise! All we have seen of her with the Dude or alone is sadness, resentment and woes! Sanae is obviously best for her! Even if she was to be able to be with her brother, their life would not be that rainbows and sunshine! Then again, maybe not so much with Sanae but still, from what we have seen, out of the three possible options Hanabi has, Sanae has given her the healthiest dose of feelings!

So back to the kiss, after it happens as Hanabi is sitting there with the cat holding her tongue, Sanae follows the kiss up with a real confession. And I was surprised at how she managed to confess without sounding corny as all hell! I mean, at this moment I think I have seen all the ways that someone can confess, especially in Asian drama but here, I was actually touched!

Sanae first asked Hanabi to tell her why she was seeing the Dude of all people! She says that she knows that they don’t love each other, that she knows Hanabi does not love him, so why? When Hanabi still can’t get her mouth to work, and Sanae probably thinking that she is only playing dub, Sanae lets her know that she knows! She knows because she has always been watching Hanabi! Always watching her. That’s how she knows!

She finally drops the line by saying that she likes Hanabi, all the while bathing in tears of freedom!

Poor Hanabi still couldn’t get her mouth to work! The episode actually ends there and in doing so, completely surprising me! I was totally expecting a bad reaction from Hanabi! I was expecting Sanae to be dumped and be forced to turn straight after she meets another fellow suffering character that would be introduced in future episodes just for her, just so she too would get someone! I was expecting Sanae to go full crazy lesbian and decide to pull a Chikane…

Thankfully that did not happen and the caps I saw did not happen either! So, the verdict now is that this is actually looking pretty good! But the fact that this is happening on in the second episode, what is going to happen in the following 10 or so? What does it mean that I did not see the Sanae dominating Hanabi scene from the anime?! Are we playing it safe? I don’t think so, especially after what we have seen Hanabi do with the Dude! They can’t just decide to censor just the yuri! So what does it mean?! Hmm maybe the preview for next episode will shade some light on the matter. Let’s take a look…
