Christmas came early you all, and I am not even talking about the force awakening!
Bravo Korea, bravo! This year belongs to you!
Episode 01 – A straight girl like this doesn’t exist!
As per usual these days it seems, I wish to start by saying ‘Thank you’ to all you lovely readers that were telling me about this wonderful web gem from South Korean. I am just so out of it these times that all I do is consume what I know without any extra time to react or go hunting myself!
Yes, I am watching Transit Girls. Yes, I am still following the 48G (well, Mayuki and 8) and I am still watching a few other shows but I just didn’t have time to write anything of them. Not though that those shows have taken a break until late Jan and myself too from College (though work is not going to pick up but that is different), you might see me posting a few things over the coming weeks.
In case anyone is interested, I am watching Transit Girls (Japanese) as I said, Hormones Season 3 (Thai), went back on the Western bad-wagon with PPL, Supergirl and Faking It! I know, I know, I was bashing it but the baiting is too strong with that one that even I couldn’t resist! I mean come on, Karma has been shady the few episodes before the break and she is no longer with a guy and neither is Amy with anyone and there is these scenes between them that people couldn’t shut up about that I just had to jump back on and it seems I might stay, for a while! I went into Supergirl because the Pilot leak got me intrigued with Kara and her sister Alex’s relationship but ended up staying for Cat/Kara instead! I swear those two are like…Their relationship (though not romantic in the least) truthfully makes the show for me! Forget the stupid love-triangle or Alex’s weird character handling, these two’s progress is near perfection! Seriously, if they grew balls and chose to make those two couple, this show would rule the world!
Also because I love DC and watch all their shows so…Not to say I don’t love Marvel. I marathoner Jessica Jones like I was on crack and there is yuri in that actually, except I was expecting a completely different couple from the set photos (THE CAKE WAS A LIE!)
And there goes my signature move – getting off track! Ah, I missed writing these posts of mine!
Getting back to the point at hand, Korea went full steam ahead after throwing stones into the calm lake with that awesome couple from Sunam Girls by putting out a brand new short-episodic web drama perfectly titled – Lily Fever! It is such a little wonderful thing, placing truth in the saying – ‘Great Things Come in Small Packages’! The episodes are so short the range from 3-7 minutes! They are short but Oh so delicious and they are released in batches every release not to mention they have [CC] English subs! Seriously, South Korea is being too mice to us. We don’t deserve this awesome service!
Well, maybe we actually do, some of us, especially after all the crap that went down this past year! There is no better way to erase bad memories we have than yuri! No way! Great to see that not only South Korean but three other countries are contributing to this healing of hearts with the mentioned shows! (The 100 is coming back in Jan too BTW, and I recommend Supergirl for Cat/Kara dynamics. Seriously, that last episode before the break, ep 08, was fantastic in this regard and that is saying something after the ending of episode 07)!
Any way back to the topic at hand, This web short is promising great things ahead! Our main girls have only known one another for mere minutes, hell, they don’t even know each other’s names yet and they are already making promises to grow old together, they have kissed already, more than three times, they have seen one another naked, they have a lily flower pot with two lilies in it!!!!!!
Leave it to South Korean to not fuck around! They brought out their Idols for this, just like they did for Sunam Girls! In here you will find FIESTA’s Jei (Eunsook), though she won’t been seen again for a while but she will be since she is in the Intros and is seen already with someone not to mention she was rooming with the gayest character ever – the one we don’t know the name of yet. She is played by the lovely Jung Yeon-joo, who was in episode 07 of Sunam Girls as the pregnant girl and she is even more smashing here that she was there! Seriously, I kept pausing just to stare at her!
Meanwhile, our heroine Kyung-ju is played by Kim Jin-hee and she is equally, if not more beautiful than Yeon-joo, depending on personal tastes of course! At first I was confused as to the characters but then after a while it got through my skull that she was playing a couple of different versions of the same character. We shall see how that pans out but the ones to focus on are her, Yeon-joo’s character (Please don’t tell me her character’s name! I want to learn it when Kyung-ju does), and of course Jei’s character Eunsook! There might or might not be a fourth girl or even more, seeing as Jei is apparently part of an Idol group called Flying Girls in this universe, and seeing as this world is the world of talent (Kyung-ju is still awaiting her break-out gig) I am sure the others members might appear and someone might be Eunsook girl, if she is not straight (apparently she is seeing Kyung-ju’s ex-boyfriend and they have eloped to Indonesia together), and she is not or was not seeing Yeon-joo’s character, making this a love triangle!
Oh please God, please don’t make this a love triangle! I am so not a fan of love triangles, less so when it comes to Yuri! The third party crasher always ends up on the short end of my temper, like say Tamao in Strawberry Panic or any other girl not Alison DiLaurentis!!!
Thankfully, Eunsook disappeared off to Indonesia and stated (where Kyung’s boyfriend was also heading) so these first episodes focused mainly on our main ship!
The plan was simple – Kyung-ju just went to collect her passport from Eunsook’s place where her ex left it. She only went to get her passport! Things escalated so fast from there that these two totally preceded the Flash on ZOOM’s hit-list!
Like i said, these episodes are so short that there is barely anything to discuss! You don’t know it but I have already covered the first episode in the last couple of paragraphs alone! That is that all that happened in this first episode, though to be fair when you look at it in a grander scale, it is all that is needed – The heroines meet! That’s it! Actually, all things considered, we have gotten all that we usually get in all first episodes, be it 30minutes ling or an hour. We got introduced to out main characters and the main couple met each other. Except instead of spending a whole hour, we got all that in under four minutes! Magic? Hell yeah!
Though the prologue and the teasers helped, I instantly fell in love with Kyung-ju’s character! I know she is un-realistic, as a girl that nice, or that not straight despite being straight, simply does not exist! Then again not to say that I am one of those ‘realistic’ people because really, where is the fun in keeping things ‘real’? Seriously!
Kyung-ju is just so much fun, I love her kind character, the way that she has these inner monologues is also fun and seeing as the two seem to have a psychic link going, being able to read each other’s thoughts, we are bound to get more! Thing is though that her thoughts are very clean. Well, she is a nice girl but still. Maybe this new relationship will change that as her innocence is smoothed out by her new awesome partner!
Speaking of awesome partner, Yeon-joo’s character…My God!
She’s, she’s pure perfection! And I am not even talking about looks! Her character is just so much fun! She is weird, even among the normal weird standards but she is not annoying at all! I just had this huge grin on my face with every thing that came out of her mouth! She is forceful without being forceful. I don’t even know what that line meant but she just, she forces you to do things without actually forcing you! And I don’t mean that in a mind control forcing kind of way! The Purpleman is dead and the force has already awakened and done with so no, I don’t mean it like that.
I mean it like making a straight girl want to kiss you just by looking at her, making a straight girl for for you despite having just met not even an hour ago! Okay, that is night impossible so maybe there is some kind of super power at work here? Then again Reina kind of had the same effect on Kumiko! I mean come on, who falls in love with someone just from seeing them cry? Not a single fiction in existence about love has even done that despite seeming something that is so simple and thus should have been done already!
And then there is Eunsook! That wink she gave Kyung-ju as she left was just criminal! How criminal you might ask? Well dear Readers, I have 16 Firefox tabs open, all with FIESTA content in them! Yes, I am just now looking them up! All because of this girl and her damn awesome wink and the whole scene!
Hell, she is the one that first awakens our heroine Kyung-ju to her tru (yuri) self! It was pleasure watching Kyung-ju lose her mind over how pretty Eunsook was when she went over her house to pick up her passport! Those actually were the inner thoughts I am looking forward to more in the coming episodes! She might as well have needed a change in drawers in that moment! Heh, maybe it is why she suddenly wanted to use the bathroom? Mystery solved!
So, to sum up this episode, Kyung-ju called her ex to ask for her passport. We learn that she is in the entertainment industry, albeit still a trainee and not a true Idol yet. She goes over to Eunsook’s place, where her ex had left her passport but she gets cold feet when she gets there. She battles with herself trying to come up with a good motive to go through the gates and this takes time until someone comes out of the compounds and finds Kyung-ju still debating on what to do.
This someone is Eunsook. She is dressed to travel, as a Hostess, and we find out that she is going to Indonesia, the same place the Ex boyfriend had said he was headed to, when Kyung-ju asks her later on. When Kyung-ju sees Eunsook, she is totally smitten by how pretty she is! She let the force in! But really, here it might just have been any other girl struck with another’s beauty without the yuri card but this is not just any other girl!
Eunsook too did some questionable things here which totally made me not buy her being straight and seeing Kyung-ju’s Ex! That wink, and the way she was touchy with Kyung-ju totally put her on my suspicious radar! Also not to forget that in the promos she was shown kissing someone! Then again, we do not yet know the context of that kiss! It might be for a project (Idols, remember?) or something like girls just having fun. All in all, she is no my radar!
Eunsook being in a hurry give Kyung-ju permission to go inside and look for her passport herself but gives her a big piece of advice! She tells her to not touch anything! She warns that her friend inside is very sensitive! Um, about that Eunsook, I don’t believe sensitive is even among the top 5 of words I would use to describe, ‘your friend’.!
And so poor Kyung-ju went in blind, not knowing a black hole that ate the threads of fate, time and space and excreted out destiny as a result, awaited her in that mansion! As soon as she entered that house and picked up the first thing she came across, which was a discarded lily, her life as she knew it, as she dreamed it, had already been rendered inexistent!
She calls out but no one answers. She places the lily in the vase near, which happened to have only one lily in it already, thus making it a couple of lilies, and thus sealing this as the best thing since sliced cake! And now I want to talk about these lilies!
Why was the lily on the floor?! I can only think of two possibilities! One, it was because of a breakup! Two, it was left there by Eunsook’s ‘friend’ for Kyung-ju herself before she had ran off to the bath!
As you might surmise, both of these are not perfect but the third option of that flower falling out of the base is even less likely with a probability as low as less than 1%. That leaves the other two theories but then in the case of 1, why wasn’t the flower stomped on and broken? Surely if it was thrown because of a breakup, if it was given to Eunsook and she declined it, it wouldn’t have been in such perfect a condition. As for 2, it seems the more likely as the only issue with it is that it wouldn’t be in ‘her’ character to go watch Eunsook leave hence over-hearing her conversation with Kyung-ju, to then think of a plan to run back, lay a lily in front of the front door, then run to the bathroom, and in such a short amount of time too! Now of course, as we know ‘she’ is kind of a mystery so was she just playing with the lily before and simply left it there? I don’t think so Sherlock! that was no place to sit and play with flowers! Neither the way to play with flowers! No one is that cruel, you either are evil – reap petals from the stock but leave it in water, or are good and just play with the flowers while they are still in the vase!
Anyway, Kyung-ju replaces the flower and calls for someone again. Perhaps because she had spent so much time outside the gates questioning whether it was okay for her to let herself inside, she really had to go and so she helped herself to the bathroom without the consent of the owner!
I lie not when I say I was already expecting something to happen in that bathroom! I have seen enough Korean movies/tv shows to know that when a character is followed into the bathroom, something is going to happen! So when what happened, happened, all I did was smile because it was so Korean! I would have been more surprised if nothing happened!
And what happened? Just as she was relieving herself, Kyung-ju starts to have an ominous feeling, her fate threads were being scissorred and her destiny set a new for, something does catch the corner of her eye and when she turns, SHE WAS NOT ALONE! There, in the bath tub, a girl is staring at her with her head poking out from behind the blinds. Kyung-ju’s reaction – priceless!
She proceeds to throw any and all objects she could get her hands on while still sitting on the toilet, at the perpetrator! Something hits home and out criminal is knocked out! Kyung-ju worries that she had killed her and quickly sorting herself out, she runs over to the bathtub and finds a non-responsive girl sub-merged. Worriedly she panics and goes to grab the girl from under the water, begging the gods that she had not just killed someone and consequently, her life before it had even taken off!
Turns out it was a trap!
Arms suddenly wrap around Kyung-ju, pulling her into the tub as the girl holds her tightly like it was her personal present on her birthday!
And that is how the episode ends! My post might make it seem like this was a 4o min episode but believe you me, it is precisely 6.44 minutes long. It is actually the longest episode out of all the five out already!
This little gem of a series is simply to good to be true! What did we do to deserve this? Okay, we suffered but some how this feels like it is too much of a counter attack! Episode 2, less than 10 minutes over all into the story and we already have out first kiss! Forget first kiss, 2nd, 3rd, 4th and both parties are all in!!!!
Now looking into context, others have done this in the first episode but let me just remind those who have forgotten, and those who don’t know, I love yuri but that doesn’t mean that I settle for any yuri! That might have been the case when I was still green, but these days I expect more from my yuri! Just because the girls kiss doesn’t mean that I am on board with it! It is very rare that I enjoy yuri where couple are already making out in the first chapter/episode/volume! Those days of having no substance are long gone, kind of why I held off writing about Transit Girls Pilot episode! It was too soon! In fact it has been a while since I read a fic where the couples were already established! Why? What is the point? The fun is in the getting there not what happens once we get there. We already know what happens when we get there – more kissing, more sex, more couplish things!
So then why am I all over this like the Christmas present I didn’t know was coming but enjoying the world out of? The answer is the the context of the kiss! How do they kiss? What leads to the kiss? What is the overall feeling of the world in which these characters are in. Lily Fever doesn’t even remotely pretend to take itself seriously. It doesn’t and yet despite how transparent the characters are, they do fit in this world and you can imagine something like that happening. There is a girl as good hearted as Kyung-ju and there is a girl that is as laid-back as ‘her’! If ‘this girl’ were to kiss a girl like Kyung-ju, she wouldn’t pull the over-used negative that a straight, supposedly, girl would. Neither is her acceptance so out of there it is only fictional.
The series doesn’t demand you to look at it through set type of glasses. It is small fun world that just wants you to take what you see as it is and not think too deeply about it. This ‘know of self’ is the first and fore-most reason why I am enjoying this so much.
Then there is the characters themselves. The way ‘she’ works Kyung-ju, from that first scene where she brings a cup of tea and Kyung-ju thinks its for her but ‘she’ says ‘that is not for you’, all serious, not because she was a tease type of character like Shizuma or Shizuru to then the opposite way where she knows what she wants and goes straight for it, to Kyung-ju being the type of character that is so innocent and so good at heart, that she wouldn’t do something to hurt others!
All these elements work to put logic, even as it is not needed, behind all these quick decisions and actions that otherwise would drive people mad! Seriously, the show is just simply fun! I was just laughing so hard at ‘her’ dream of growing up to be a certain kind of granny! The things that ‘she’ did, her actions towards Kyung-ju are all so unique and new and unintentionally fun that I just can’t help it but have fun watching this.
Ah, I just love their characters and the way they clash! Where Kyung-ju is so willing and good natured that she can’t say no to ‘her’, ‘she’ doesn’t seem to know the boundaries of liberty! It’s like, in both of their innocence, they are unknowingly heading deeper into the tangles of their newly formed destiny!
Like, that scene where Kyung-ju wonders about ‘her’ age and ‘she replies with the date of her birth. Kyung-ju realises that it is actually ‘her’ birthday and congratulates her. ‘She’ then asks Kyung-ju where her present is! Kyung-ju of course has nothing for ‘her’! That moment! How awesomely unreal is ‘her’ character in that moment? And it was this that she used to steal that kiss either! No! And thank the Lord! it she had then all credibility would have been lost! This was just ‘her’ character and they kept it that way.
The kiss came a bit later and it was more on it’s own thing, a curiosity, a spur of the moment, because this is ‘her’ character. They have established it and thus it is not surreal when she kisses Kyung-ju! Actually, the kiss is not out of nowhere. When Kyung-ju started hiccupping, probably due to nerves, ‘she’ started to press on Kyung-ju’s bottom lip saying that there was a point there that stopped hiccups. In doing so things are discovered, like how soft Kyung-ju’s lips are and really, at that proximity and in that situation, anyone would have the urge to kiss Kyung-ju!
But not anyone would kiss her. We would all thing it inhumane and really, we wouldn’t even find ourselves in that situations to begin with with a complete stranger! Seriously, at this point they still haven’t introduced one another! We the audience know Kyung-ju’s name but ‘she’ doesn’t and Kyung-ju too doesn’t know who ‘she’ is! 100% strangers but because of ‘her’ unique personality, she is able to find herself in that situation. And because of that still, she doesn’t think twice about the urge she gets to kiss those ‘soft’ lips only inches away from her. So she does and it makes sense because she ‘her’!
The reaction of the kissed also makes sense because she is Kyung-ju, despite being straight, having had a boyfriend and no girlfriend known about! That gushing over Eunsook at the gate? It is not a sign that she was curious! Many girls appreciate the beauty of others and in fact straight characters usually are the ones who voice those thoughts more often! Gay girls like Kumiko? Na-uh. Best keep it to yourself! Remember their first meeting? Please try to convince me that Kumiko wasn’t simple smote having seen that crying face of Reina’s? Most especially so the second time she sees a crying Reina! She was totally smote out of her mind! But she did not voice it!
What I am trying to say is that I wouldn’t even be mad if at some point we find out that Kyung-ju was actually straight, or at least still struggled with a definition or meaning of her relationship with ‘her’. This is what so fascinates me with this little gem of a series!
And yet even as I paint this picture of Kyung-ju, she still has layers to her. Like this time that ‘she’ suggests to her that they grow old together, Kyung-ju still shows a human element when she finally voices the words – ‘I barely know you’. She still has a brain it’s only the goodness of her character that she is the way she is. So when ‘she’ presses on asking Kyung-ju what her favourite food was and then going on to promise that she would cook it for Kyung-ju every single day, even though it would have come off as a creepy command from anyone else, here it made sense. And even if Kyung-ju actually declined that offer, it was not because she was saying no to the actual ‘spending the rest of our lives together’ request but more like it was tedious cooking her favourite meal every day.
In fact she went on to feel guilty despite the fact that she didn’t mean to hurt ‘her’ when ‘she’ gave her this really puppy look. Kyung-ju of course felt the weight of it and she would have done anything asked of her in return if ‘she’ was that kind of person but she wasn’t. And so when she laid Kyung-ju on top of her and proceeded to make out, if it was a master plan, it worked flawlessly because Kyung-ju was already softened and would have done anything.
Also there was this moment when Kyung-ju asks ‘her’ why she is making her sleep on her arm! I am like, dear Kyung-ju, why are you sleeping on her arm? It’s not like she is holding you down, forcing you to do it! Also, you did not have to keep kissing her even as she kissed you first. I am pretty sure that if you said no at any one point, ‘she’ would have stopped.
As you can see from the lack of transition, these episodes are so continuous that I did not even notice when one ended and the other began in the queue! You would think that episodes so short would have exposition so great it might as well be a slideshow but the story is continuous and yet it feels content heavy despite being mere 5 minutes on average long!
There were so many ‘yuri moments’ in this first three episodes that any other show would require seasons to reach the same number! And they are not just thrown in out of nowhere. They are in context, they make sense. You don’t even realise they are there because they are so smoothly woven in!
That ‘gay-shoes’ at the end of episode 3 though totally knocked me side-ways! My brain instantly went to a certain festival in a certain 8th episode of a certain show that SHALL BE NAMED – Hibike! Euphonium!! The next you know we will be seeing some ‘gay-trashcans’ reference next! Yes, that was in Hibike too! I bet you totally missed that, didn’t ya! I mean come on, it was so obvious! One can had a darker shade which was so Reina while the other was as brown as Kumiko’ hair! I guess I am the only one that got that!
That end roll was kind of interesting too, for if you noticed, it seems like Kyung-ju took the initiative when she rolled them over and actually ended up on top! Could it be? If she turns out to actually be the dominant I am gonna cry! Sweet lovely tears of course because that kind of twist on her character tastes of nothing but heavenly goodness!
Dear Readers, in the miraculous chance that you couldn’t tell, I am in love with this little gem! Thank you Korean Santa! My present got to me okay!
Until next time…
