Finished watching episode 7 again (to get the HD caps) and even though it wasn’t the first time watching it, even though I knew what was coming, I still found it incredibly painful sitting through the episode.
I love yuri so much that it has gotten to the point where watching het is like when you were young and you didn’t want to go to the doctor to get that shot but you had to because it was necessary. That is how het is to me. I tolerate it because that is nature. No matter what I do there will always be het so I know I have to put up with it but it hurts so very much!
It hurts much more so when it is put where it shouldn’t be! Watching this episode was like watching a darn soap opera with a slice of detective drama to keep the plot going when away from romance! I can say with certainty that more than 90% of times, if you see what we saw in this drama, it always leads to romance!
Thank the Lord for this series being in the other 10%!!
As usual I am not going to go in too deep into the plot. If you haven’t seen it yet, then you can still watch it clueless that way you will still enjoy the episode having not been spoiled for everything, and if you have seen the episode, then you know the plot already anyway so I can just skim through it.
I already mentioned it during the last episode’s post but this is going to be really short. There was barely any Rena/Kotoha this episode. In fact they did not even see each other at all! Their contact, the only contact they had with one another was through a phone call!
The rest of the episode was spent with Kubozuka. Speaking if, I still think Kotoha is laughing inside at that name. Whenever she says it or it is mention there is this incredulous feel to her voice. I wonder if she had some ill feelings towards him? Anyway he stole all the time for this episode. My worries from the last episode were realized when things really took the turn it did!
You know, I think I should have picked up on it! The suddenness with which they pushed these two together was not natural! Kubozuka already had a wife. He already had a child with that wife! It had been just days since he and Rena had met face to face! They shouldn’t have been at the level of closeness that they were pushed to this episode!
I can understand from Rena’s perspective! She is actually a good natured person inside and cares about others a great deal so she would have cared for Kubozuka especially after finding out about his wife and meeting his daughter! Her getting emotional with Kubozuka was not unexpected!
What rubbed me the wrong way was Kubozuka himself! The series was just trying so hard to sell him to Rena that it got unnerving real fast! It went from seeing Rena as an enemy from the end of last episode to every one and all of his lines sounding like a com-on towards Rena by the end of this one! Seriously, it got so bad that I muted some scenes to at least save my ears!
We have to remember too that Rena is kind of green in that area! She had probably never had a boyfriend before given the fact that her family was kind of out of it and she was less fore-going than Sakura. Then Sakura had to die and that pushed Rena towards her goal of finding the Death God. It shouldn’t be surprising that she would have fell for Kubozuka, even though it is had to tell if she really was. But let’s be honest, if you were in Rena’s position and things happened like they did in this episode, you would so fall for Kubozuka! He literally saved both her humanity (from being raped) and her life (she was to be killed after the raping). And then he went on to be all gentlemanly in every moment that followed!
Then the family had to happen!
I have never hated a family visit so much like I did this one! I have seen this before many times and every time it gets on my nerves! I am of course talking about the fact of when you bring a person over and the family members right away assume that this person was your boyfriend/girlfriend. I really hate it!
That happened in this episode! First it was Yuzuki (Kubozuka’s daughter) calling Rena her new Mom! What kind of child her age talks like that first of all?! First she was ‘Those are my Mom’s clothes’ when Rena was borrowed Kubozuka’s wife’s clothes. Then she was like ‘are you my new mom?’! I was glaring at her trying to instill fear to get her to shut up but it didn’t work for some reason because she was not done! She went on to invite her ‘new Mom’ to a parent visit at her school! Rena being the woman I said she was couldn’t refuse so she agreed!
But it wasn’t the daughter alone! As they were about to leave and Kubozuka had gone to say goodbye to Yuzuki, his mother was like ‘she is a nice person’, talking about Rena of course! Like, the whole family was out to get Rena (and I mean that literally) and then even Kubozuka himself was like, ‘I used to hate detectives, but then I met you’!
I am telling you dear Readers, you have no idea how painful this was for me, sitting through this episode! I nearly got on my knees and kiss the ground when we finally got that call!
You have probably realized that I am using Kubozuka’s name and not calling him ‘Dick’ like I would have otherwise done given the same situation? When I use the name of a potential love rival it usually means that they either aren’t a threat in the long run or they are good characters and knowing what I know now, let’s just say it is the former. That is not to say that he wasn’t a good character because he most certainly was. I blame the story for breaking him towards the end but given the way things ended, I don’t mind much!
He was good because he did ‘the thing’! By that I mean he joined the other male characters in the show, who are all potentially able to be Rena’s love interest, but aren’t, and yet they all seem to be pushing Rena and Kotoha together! Kubozuka joined the brigade and earned his name this episode when he did the same thing too!
After he had rescued Rena from the gangs, they were in the car and Kubozuka was explaining how he had found her. She had asked if he wanted her gratitude (that is the level of relationship they were on even after he had saved her life and yet, and yet!!!) but he said she didn’t have because it was because of her leaving a trail that he was able to find her.
But he said that if she needed to thank someone it would be that other woman working at the Anti-Detective Agency. He said it was because of her that he was able to go looking for her in the first place. He then handed her his phone for Rena to call Kotoha with. Rena was surprised when she heard that which makes me happy to know that she still doesn’t fully understand Kotoha. You would think that at this stage she would know Kotoha would have done something like that. That she would know Kotoha worried about her that much. You would have thought she had gotten the message after how straight forward Kotoha had been with her feelings but alas.
Then we got our much needed call!
It is a trivial thing but I loved when they showed us the moments back at the dorms with Kotoha by herself. Seeing her sitting there by herself in am empty home, in the dark, with very evident worry for Rena really, really says so much in my opinion! I love those details and I am happy that the series does that for Kotoha. We see this side of the story but we know that Rena doesn’t see it and I can’t wait for the time when she really realizes how much she means to Kotoha.
For now I don’t think that Rena truly knows what she has in Kotoha. For now it is on Kotoha to be there for Rena. She is the only one who truly knows what she wants and is in this relationship. Meanwhile Rena is still in the grey area. There is no doubt that she cares for Kotoha but it is not different from how she cared for Kubozuka this episode. In fact the ending was akin to how that episode where Kotoha was badly hurt ended! Rena is that good a person so she probably see Kotoha as just a young girl that she has to care for and the fact that Kotoha had ties with Sakura makes things more solid.
What I am waiting on and where I think all this push is heading is finally seeing Rena accept Kotoha as more than just a responsibility. She doesn’t yet see Kotoha as her family and all her actions point to that. The way she still gets surprised at things Kotoha does for her, or says to her also proves that. She has yet to fully appreciate Kotoha or open up to her.
Things are changing though. For example the tone she used in their conversation on the phone this episode was more, homey, less professional if you will. She still hasn’t gotten there yet but Rena is standing to be appreciative of Kotoha’s presence. We are only at episode 7 and hopefully this is the usual 11 episode series which means we have nearly another half of episodes to go! That’s a lot of time for Rena to finally come to love Kotoha.
With the ending of the episode, where we saw Kubozuka being stabbed four times in the abdomen (meaning a great deal of sensitive organs were damaged), in the middle of nowhere and far away from the hospital, there is no way he will make it! I don’t dislike the guy but if he survives that will be bullshit and the first negative turn in the script, which has been on the money so far.
If the guy that stabbed him almost dies from taking the knife just once, and it was a light stabbing compared to how aggressively Kubozuka was stabbed, then there is no way that Kubozuka would survive. So it is safe to say that he is going to kick it!
And that dear Readers, is what I was talking about last episode’s post. I was apologizing for speculating Kubozuka dying and leaving his daughter in the care of Kotoha and Rena and then this went and happened! Of course he might live, we don’t know yet but like I said, if he does, that will be shitty writing!
So I am assuming that he is dead and thus I no longer see him as a threat. Saying that, he can get his name back! With him out of the picture, he who was the best possibility of being the male love interest, it is safe to say that there will not be any Rena het! And with the other two (Suma and Sota) all seeming to support Kotoha, well, I have high hopes!
So yeah, that was basically it for this episode. I have a feeling that all the insinuations for a Kubozuka/Rena romance were actually red flags but seeing as it has never been done that way before (at least I haven’t seen them use romance as a flag), I am not so sure about it. It would be the reverse trying to get us to hate Kubozuka before he is killed off but pushing him towards Rena!
Oh wait, that is just me!
Other viewers were probably hooked on the possibility and then they got their hopes totally crushed because it was actually a red flag for Kubozuka! Seriously, I am kind of wow’d that they actually did it. Surely they aren’t going to kill of a nice cop in a sea of bad cops like him, right? I mean he not only lost his wife but he has a daughter! Surely they aren’t going to kill him off! But do I want him to stay alive? I have a bad feeling if he stays alive things are going to get derailed real fast!
Oh well, the next episode will tell because that is it for this one! This was perhaps the most let-down episode in regards to Rena/Kotoha but I will be happy with what I got! What we saw of Kotoha showed me how that much more she cares for Rena. She was waiting for her, for that call, for anything from Rena for hours. The worry she had for her, so naked on her face was really heart-warming.
I am already sold on Kotoha, now the ball is in Rena’s court. I guess from here on out we are waiting for her response. Rest assured I will be there when it happens!
I still can’t believe this is happening between Kitagawa Keiko and Kawaguchi Haruna! The last time I was doubled whammy’d with a drama casting like this was Toda Erika and Aragaki Yui in ‘Code Blue’! That wasn’t the first time I had seen them together but by the time I watched ‘Gal Circle’ I wasn’t that familiar with either of them so that doesn’t count. Speaking of, I have to find an HD version of that drama and re-watch it! Remembering the drama, I believe they had some chemistry in it too.
Now, if only Keiko and Haruna would get at least physical. A hug will do, but I don’t see them hugging at all unless something very drastic involving the two happened. Rena just isn’t that type of character and Kotoha is more of a follower. She won’t take an initiative in something like that. Then again Kotoha is changing so maybe, just maybe! Also with the ending of this episode, if Kubozuka really kicks it, Rena might be broken enough to warrant a hug or at least some kind of comfort from Kotoha.
Still, even then Kotoha hasn’t changed enough to have the confidence to be that physical with Rena. She probably even feels like she isn’t worthy yet to have that inter-dependent with Rena. Meanwhile with Rena, we all know she is one who keeps her feelings to herself. She would much rather cry in a corner by herself than lean over someone else’s shoulder. That someone has to take matters in their own hands and pull her in and Kotoha hasn’t reached that point of strength yet.
But we still have 4 episodes left (hopefully) so plenty of time for Kotoha to get stronger and Rena to lower her defenses enough for Kotoha to close the gap between their hearts.
And I am so turning this into a wall of text so let’s stop here, shall we?
