So, Panda, one of my wonderful Readers, shared with me this PV from wonderful Taiwan. It’s for the song ‘We’re all different, yet the same’ by artist Jolin Tsai and my God! The FEELS! Actually I am pretty sure that I have come across info about this before. I think they were pics of Jolin and Ruby on Tumblr but the info wasn’t enough to tell me that there was an actual song and PV about them! Well, now I know!
BTW to those who are wondering, it’s already 3am here so technically it’s already a new day but even so, I just couldn’t wait to talk about this PV! It’s so deep and so sweet and it hits all the hard spots! The PV is kind of confusing when you watch it and even though you get the gist of it from the subs (link to the vid later) it kind of leaves one confused but fear not, I am here to clear those doubts, for anyone lost that is…
At first when I first delved into this PV head-first without any other info, I was left confused with the time-line, especially when the PV ended! I didn’t know what was what, if the middle of the PV took place in the mind of older Jolin ( since she is the younger version) or if it actually happened.
But after the third watch with subs and some internet digging, everything made sense. From my understanding, the PV does take place at the end after everything in the middle has happened and Qiu Xiu (played by actress Ruby Lin) has already died! The beddings we see older Jolin folding are from the bed that Qiu died in! This follows up on everything that happened in between perfectly. So basically this PV takes place right after Qiu’s death!
From what I gathered from the intranets, the story for this PV/Song is actually based on a true story about a lesbian couple who had lived together for over 30 years but in secret! The PV follows up on their final moments together and older Jolin finally deciding to come out because let’s be honest, what else is she left to lose? She has had 30 years of happiness with the woman of her life and now that she is gone and older Jolin at that age, really, nothing at all to lose.
I can only just imagine how crushed older Jolin was at knowing that she might have lost her love due to society’s un-acceptance of gay relationships. As the PV tells us, the hospital that Qiu was taken to could not perform the necessary surgery in time for her to be saved because no family member was around to sign her consent form. Older Jolin had stated her relationship to Qiu as her best Friend with whom she has been living with for over thirty years and that she has no other but the Doctor couldn’t approve it due to hospital regulations.
Older Jolin had to call in Qiu’s nephew (NEPHEW!!!!) to sign the form before they could do anything but by then it was too late. Qiu passes away right before Older Jolin’s eyes with her lover’s hand in hers. But in that moment a miracle happens…
I am still not exactly sure what to think of the scene that followed to be honest. Was that how it was, in that something happened to Older Jolin at that time where she had a dream sequence of marrying Qiu or did she just have a flashback to their actual wedding that happened? But then if it it actually happen, the wedding I mean, there was then no reason for her to lie about her relationship with Qiu! Then again, they might have gotten married in secret, seeing as the audience was small in size and also seemed to be made up of other gay couples. Hmmm, a fourth watch to see if Older Jolin is wearing a wedding ring is in order. Give me a moment…
So, just re-watched the PV and both times; before and after Qiu’s death, Older Jolin is not wearing a ring. Then again, it is impossible to begin with, I mean it would have to be a ghost ring and there is no way we can see a ghost ring so I will just take her mind’s changes to imply that she was married in that moment of Qiu’s death because the whole PV takes place at the hospital and when Qiu was first admitted, Older Jolin told the Doctor that she was only Best Friends with Qiu but then when the nurse came to ask her (in preparations for Qiu’s body no doubt) Older Jolin says with complete calmness that Qiu is her wife!
It took her the death of her significant other to finally come out to the public about their actual relationship. Then again they had only just gotten married and their story is to be continued in the afterlife no doubt but still. To think that a simple thing as acceptance of the different kinds of love could lead to the loss of life! Sometimes I am ashamed of the world I live in. Thank the Lord things are beginning to change.
Just as Jolin says in her lyrics, there are different kinds of people and yet they are all the same. So with that logic, there is also different kinds of love and yet they are all the same so why can’t they be accepted by many out there?
Any way, here is the PV on youtube (No subs) and on Vimeo (with subs but just make sure CC is turned on and set to English!)
