AKA ~ The World Of Kanako

First of all, I pity those who are going into this movie without experience because their minds are gonna come away totally scathed! This is one of those movies that will change your world, or the way you look at the world and what you think you know about it! Thankfully, I like to think of myself as one of the veterans and this was just a walk in the park for me. That experience should be a good thing, and it is but it is also a bad thing!

Bad because with my experience with these kinds of movies, I found myself totally under-whelmed by it! It felt to me like they were just trying too hard, and totally failing. No, fail is a harsh way to look at it because that logic only applies to those with experience with movies like these. To others, this might as well be a masterpiece. Well, that is after they have finally come to terms with the movie!

To those who need spoon-feeding, this movie is very, VERY disturbing! Komatsu Nana (yes, that’s her name! I know which Komatsu Nana you are thinking of, in fact even google thinks of that same Komatsu Nana when you search with it but it is not NANA’s Komatsu Nana!) was magnificent in her role as Kanako! Even as her story was told via flashbacks through her father’s investigations, Nana totally stole the whole show! She has to have been paid billions for this role because if she wasn’t, Japan I am judging you! Seriously, Nana was amazing in this movie! She did stuff that would A-List any actor/actress that is brave enough to actually go through with what she had to do for her scenes! I don’t want to give anything away in case you want to watch it (well other than the yuri parts because that’s the point for this post) but I will just warn you by quoting myself once again…THIS MOVIE IS DISTURBING!

With that out of the way, let’s get to the interesting parts, starting with me shouting…

You told us that Nakajo Ayami was your first (girl) kiss but it so wasn’t! Kawaki came out way before Zero did and yet here I see with, getting all cheeky with Nana! How dare yo-

Oh wait…

Sorry, my bad. There was no kiss between Aoi and nana in this movie! Damn it all, this was one of the flaws for this movie for me! I am pretty sure that during the time they spent together, all that time it took Kanako to corrupt Chono(Aoi’s character) they must have done something, especially seeing as Kawaki did not have any problems kissing and making out with just about anyone from fellow students, to teachers to government officials to her own father…Oops! I said no spoilers, didn’t I? Oh well…

Any way, something must definitely have happened especially seeing as Chono still held feelings for Kawaki even after she had been corrupted. We see this when she gives Morishita (Ai’s character) the evil eye when she was bad-mouthing Kanako during the cafe scene as they talked to Kanako’s father.

See, the movie spend all it’s time on Kanako’s father and we only got to see Kanako through other people’s eyes and their view of her. Now that I think about it, we never know the real Kanako because neither of the characters, not even her father spent enough time with Kanako to get to know the real Kanako. But the movie wanted to play the mysterious card, trying to seem all intelligent and sophisticated but if you are used ot those kinds of movies, Kawaki just seems like an old record re-playing which is why I wished that they had gone the opposite route and followed Kanako’s view instead of other people’s view of her.

Like, can you just imagine how awesome that version would have been? To see Kanako meeting all these people, turning them into the worse versions of themselves that they could ever be! A movie titled The World of Kanako (well, the eng version anyways) and yet we don’t get to know the real Kanako rubs me the wrong way! You know, when I saw the DVD art on Amazon JP I just knew that this was not going to be anything like what we were hoping! Sadly I was proved right and the movie was more The World of Kanako’s Father than Kanako’s! I feel like we missed out on a lot of things because of this! If they had focused on Kanako everything would have been way better, especially if everything ended with that car scene between the female teacher and Kanako but alas, even that scene as it happened her in this movie left very little impact with me. I was like, Oh, she is dead?

Ah crap! I’m sorry guys, seems like I can’t keep a secret for the life of me. Any way it would have been pointless with these following caps about said scene any way. But really, I feel like they wasted a lot of things and characters especially Aoi’s character because of the route they went with. And so as it pains me to say, other than Kanako seducing Chono and telling her she loves her and Chono totally selling her soul to the Devil because of those simple world, nothing else happens, until we see her dead body later…GODDAMMIT!

 
 
  

 
 
 
 
You’re such a turn-on Sensei!

Kanako’s very last words, I kid you not!

Any way, I suffered through the last half of this movie because I was so not ready to throw in the towel after I was licked like a puppy when they killed off Chono! I was so pissed off let me tell you! Other than that Guy, no other character close to Kanako got any development. We did not get an explanation of what the connection between Morishita and Chono was, how they met, were they friends or just two people connected by Kanako, and if so, how come Morishita was clean?! Not a single person close to Kanako came away un-scathed and yet she seemed to know Kanako quite a bit, or was all she knew what she learned from Chono? Alas, we shall never know because for some reason this was about her father, and some stupid policemen we couldn’t care less about! I swear the more I write about it the more I am disappointed by this movie!

But I was curious to see what the father would do when he met Kanako and what Kanako was doing which saw me riding the movie out till the end and then this scene hit! I confess, I was not prepared for this! Even as I have already seen Kanako kiss just about any living thing that crosses her path for some reason seeing her seducing the Teacher and even going so far as to kiss her somehow caught me completely un-prepared! I guess I will give it that!

Too bad Kanako was already on this particular teacher’s Black list which meant she was kind of allergic to her advances which saw Kanako meet her dull end! Seriously, I felt absolutely nothing when I saw her dying! This is all the movie’s fault! They should have given us the real world of Kanako, showed us what she was actually doing, showed us her life, her very awesome and intriguing life! Seriously, Kanako was either the Devil incarnate of a very misunderstood Angelic being with the power to sway people! I mean the effects she had on all those around her were not for the turn of the good but we never got that cut and dry feeling that she was evil! We never know if she actually meant it when she told all those people she loved them.

We never know anything real about Kanako!

But, you only see this if you manage to survive the surface layers of the movie and let me assure you, this is not he the faint of hearts! All those new to these kinds of movies won’t have time to go any farther than simply gawking at the awesome and complex way the movie was presented.

Maybe I am being too harsh but that’s what you get for wasting great characters like Ai and Aoi! Like, why make Kanako kiss just about anybody lese and not Aoi!! The kiss that would have made more sense, and even maybe adding a bit of normalcy to Kanako’s chara but like I said, they were trying for sophisticated which killed the movie for those that would have seen something similar already.

That being said, I am not sure if I should recommend this. I mean only if there are nana fans or those who want to know more about her then this is a must. She was just simply marvellous in this as Kanako! She’s probably going to win the Actress Award for 2014. Yuri? Not sure to be honest! Sure she kissed the Teacher but the scene was an acquired taste. it won’t leave you all tingly inside so I guess…No? Unless you just want to check pink-haired and stoned Aoi-chan out then go check this movie out right now!
