|Léa Seydoux as Sidonie||Diane Kruger as Queen of France|
Yes, just watched this movie, finally! And you know what, it’s totally certified that I am a glutton for punishment! Even way back when I first watched the trailer, I pretty much knew what the movie would be like but despite that knowledge, despite it having been confirmed as I watched the movie itself, I still went and shipped the wrong couple! I am almost as into pain as Sidonie herself was in this movie!
Now, I say wrong but not in the sense that they aren’t shippable even though most other times I have more fans against me (Mai/Mikoto LOL). No, I mean that the ships I pick are most commonly different from what other viewers will dive into head first. As you see here, the caps I post will be in greater favour of Sidonie instead of Gabrielle, who we see in the posters and trailer as the Queen’s love interest and in fact the Queen is so smitten with her, she goes crazy just from her mere absence!
Now onto the movie, I am not sure if Sidonie meets the Queen for the first time as we do or if they had met before but I will go for not having met before. If they had it was awkward for how little The Queen knew of Sidonie and her life. On the other hand, they were really very familiar with each other for people in their standing. The Queen sure did not seem to be that close to other people as she was with Sidonie, except with Gabrielle but that is a different story there, them being lovers or something. In fact the Queen is so not on good terms with the others to the point of the people going against her and the King. One of her most close of helpers was even bad-mouthing her right across the walls, that how bad a relationship she had with others. In fact the conflict of the movie is about the people turning against the King and herself and is escalates quite quickly. Sidonie too, a mere book-worm whose job was to suggest readings and sometimes read to the Queen, found herself caught in the middle of it. Actually she was caught in a triangle of this political conflict and that of Gabrielle and The Queen.
Here is the thing – Sidonie is so in love with the Queen that she would literally do anything for her. Now, you might wonder why this is new seeing as she is the Queen and during that time, surely there was no choice but to obey! That is not the case. The King himself was an okay guy and easy going and a person of peace that would rather cave to the ideas from the masses than to be an initiator of conflict because of stubbornness. And as I already stated, the Queen was very much hated, partly due to the fact that she was courting the Duchess Gabrielle, who was married by the way! And the Queen had no issues displaying her affections for Gabrielle even in front of hundreds of her court members.
And so, while the people used the bad way that their rulers ruled their land as an excuse to start a rebellion, the hate towards the Queen was multiplied some because of her gay ways. But the Queen’s pains were more on the fact that she was to be separated from Gabrielle than the fact that her people wanted her head! She was that far into Gabrielle, which I guess will make people forgive her for what she did to poor Sidonie in the end.
Poor Sidonie, she was the only person in the whole court, nay, probably in the whole country, which translated to the whole world, that truly believed and loved the Queen. Yes, I don’t believe that Gabrielle loved the Queen as much as a lover would. Not even once did I see her comfort the Queen even as she was so saddened. And in fact, when the Queen suggested for her to leave so she could be safe, because she had heard that a lady had been stabbed in her carriage as she had been mistaken for Gabrielle, Gabrielle had agreed to that suggestion without even a pause or a single protest. She used the Queen’s status by calling it an order she couldn’t refuse and the way the Queen broke at that was just so…
And of course Sidonie was the one there to pick up the royal pieces once again when once again, she bared her self to the Queen’s whims because…
As as she was warned not to do it, she just couldn’t. I really thought that when the Queen asked her to do it, that she was finally going to snap and give the Queen a tongue-lashing she so deserves but this kind of love is so strong that Sidonie does nothing but do what she has been asked. And even as I thought that after that she will start to see the Queen in a new way and finally start questions the love she has towards her, Sidonie through and through remains royal to the Queen and we know this right before the credits hit.
It’s really, really saddening. To see what Sidonie has done for the Queen trough out the movie. To know how much devotion and love she had towards the Queen. Only for her to be rewarded in such a foul way!! I was actually kind of pissed of at the Queen and had it not been that some-what redeeming act from her, I would have flipped a table at her, Queen of France or not!
For Sidonie, a person who has helped brighten up the Queen’s blue-lit life where Gabrielle wouldn’t help – seriously though, not once did I see her helping at all. And in fact that most times Sidonie was needed had to do with Gabrielle. Because after all, only things that could depress the Queen could only be related to Gabrielle. Once Sidnoie had to even go and fetch Gabrielle because the Queen was in need of her company at such dark times where the castle was in unrest! When Sidonie got to Gabrielle’s, what was she doing? Totally sleeping like a baby after a night of sex. She was all naked and freely laid back without a care in the world. Everyone else couldn’t even sleep because of fear of being burned while they slept. The whole town was not sleeping yet she was the only one that…
I could totally hear Sidonie scornful thoughts as the stood there staring down at the slumbering Duchess. I really couldn’t see what good she was to the Queen other than being the south to the Queen’s Northern magnetic feelings. Sidonie deserved the Queen’s love and so much more and yet what did she get out of it in the end? I mean okay, the Queen was closer to her that she was with others. She gave the physical affections to Sidonie by allowing her to be that close in her personal space. The only other person was Gabrielle.
So, what did the Queen ask of Sidonie that was so bad as to make me not like her so much? As I said before, the country was in disarray and there was a royal list going around with head to be cut off on it. The Queen’s and Gabrielle’s were on it and while the Queen had planned to flee with Gabrielle, the King did not want to leave which meant that she had to stay with him. But even so, that meant that their lives were in danger and I did explain how much desperately in love she was with the Duchess.
So she instead asks Gabrielle to leave in disguise for a different part of the country. That way, she would be safe! But going around in a carriage would only mean that they were of high stature and being that high up meant danger and possible beheading! So the only way to travel safely would be for Gabrielle to masquerade as a servant for another Lady. Guess which Lady – Yep, Sidonie!
That’s right, the Queen asked Sidonie to lay her life on the line for the safety of the Duchess Gabrielle. Ah, but that’s not the worst part! Something worse than even the hard-skinned way that the Queen had so easily asked this treacherous deed of poor Sidonie, was that Sidonie had to go disguised as the Duchess herself!!!! Can you like, think of the worse possible thing to do?! Not only was the Duchess a wanted person but there was that little fact that Sidonie might have had negative feelings towards the Duchess due to the fact that she had all the Queen’s love with not a drop left to be given to herself and yet she had to forsake her own life in place of the Duchess’!!!!!
God, how sick is that?! And they way Sidonie looked on in disbelief towards the Queen as she asked her of this was so heart-breaking I just couldn’t! Sidonie – who cried and worried for the Queen’s well-being and even would go to get her the woman she loved just so she could be happy even if for a moment…That Sidonie, to be paid for her devotion with this!?!
Yep, the Queen wasn’t on my favourite list after that. Even the kiss she gave to Sidonie in the end only managed to lift her just a few places but not much. I only will delude myself in thinking that the Queen was only putting on a front then during the asking because they had company and that she was in fact sorrowful for having to put Sidonie in such a position. I will continue deluding myself that the Queen did see much more in Sidonie than just her reader and that perhaps, she had a place in her heart for Sidonie even if small. I will continue believing that the Queen sent Sidonie away like like to save her because Sidonie would not have left otherwise and she would have died. Because for Sidonie to still love her even till the end! For Sidonie to die for her lover. It’s just so sad otherwise!
There wasn’t much of the Duchess and the Queen as the movie was centred around Sidonie and we only saw the Queen when she did which is why I was drawn to her more than I was the Duchess. Sidonie was a very complex character. She was a loner which was very strange in the world they were in where everyone slept with everyone like it was a Sex City or something. Women were really physical with each other as you saw in the caps above but for Sidonie? She only had a thing with that rower Dude, well, almost a thing because as they got down to business, just still in the kissing phase, they were interrupted because the Queen was asking for Sidonie. We know what she did right then of course! We never saw the guy again after that! I would bet that Sidonie’s itch that needed scratching then had been because of the Queen too!
Any way, yeah. The movie was exactly what I expected so I liked it. There is a thing about French movies that just compel you to watch the whole thing even if it was 3 in the morning and you had college in a few hours!
I loved it too because of the fact that there was less Queen/Duchess moments and more Sidonie/Queen because I had shipped them all the way since the trailer! I really need to stop doing that! It has cost me a good few enjoyment watching because I don’t always get the couples I ship in the actual thing (Damn you Yuru Yuri!)!
Any who, totally recommend this. Do watch it! France are really great at these drama/periodical movies!
