If you have seen a couple of old Jdrama, you and I can both agree to at least one thing –

Japan sure isn’t making them like they used to anymore!

The 90’s were the bomb! well, and the 80s of course (Can’t forget about Sukeban Deka). The most memorable for me were Glass Mask and this one. While Glass Mask wasn’t much more than goggles friendly, there is no doubt that Mayumi and Maya were so totally shippable…until down the road when things turned to Titanic!

This was 1997, I guess things started to fall apart then because by the end of that drama, I can’t tell you WTF happened to Maya x Ayumi chemistry that was so driving the series! Not only did things go out of whack but the actress for Ayumi changed! I guess she couldn’t handle the bull-plot anymore! But I am getting off track here…

Let’s step back in time a little bit. In fact as far back as to when my Goddess Yukirin was just a little thing of one year old! To those who are missing out on life this means that this drama aired in 1992!

Wow, that’s a long time ago!

It is as such in fact that I find it pretty respectable that Japan aired such a drama at that time! And let me tell you this isn’t like these latest yuri dramas where everything is half-baked like the ‘should have been golden’ Last Friends which shied away from what would’ve been the best ending – a Haruka x Michiru ending!

Nope, in Sono Toki Haato wa Nusumareta, or as I like to short it – Sono Hatsu, The ending was damn reminiscent of KanaMiko in that in the triangle of a girl and boy chasing the other girl, the girl won the race just as Chikane beat Souma’s butt!

What hooked me to this drama on the get go was Isshiki Sae as the lead! As soon as the drama began and it seemed it would be in her POV, I was screaming like a crazy resident! Seriously, she was so damn funny-tastic as the lead that I didn’t fail to grin like an idiot every now and then! No, all three mains, even the supporting character were just so perfect for their roles it was as if the series itself was built around their real characters. Only bad actor was the uncle! He was just like all these actors in JDramas nowadays – So superficial!

Other than him, everyone else was just brilliant. The series was only 5 episodes long but it felt like you grew with the characters as they so awesomely did themselves in those wonderful five episodes that it felt like the series ran for months!

Seriously, I cannot praise this drama enough! And yes, I am being serious! I have spent a lot of money to get the VHS (No DVDs >.<) for this which surprisingly could only be found in china! – I am disappoint Japan~ Seriously, It cost me 70 euro to get that shitty quality with Chinese subs which I could have gotten from their popular streaming site. I am still looking for a raw and better quality for this so if there are any local Japan residents reading this ( I am looking at you Shirou) please do help me out. I don’t care how much I spend. I love this series that much!

And with that, you will excuse me for the eye-cancer you might receive from the following caps and the annoying subs!

So funny,

I will say it again, the actors and actresses in this were awesome and most especially Isshiki Sae as Hiroko. she was bloody fantastic I tell ya. The series was that much better because it was in her POV and we got to hear many of her awesomely funny thoughts. On the other hand, Uchida Yuki pulled off her character, Saki, to almost perfection. Though it could be said to all the other characters, Saki’s development as a character was the most notable with Hiroko coming in right behind. You could clearly see that by the end of the last episode (which was episode 5…5!) Saki and Hiroko were not the same clueless/innocent and wild girl that they were at the start, respectively.

The series is kind of a flashback as it starts in the future where Hiroko is celebrating her 22nd birthday. As the fireworks go off, one of her friends mentions how she remembers that her first kiss was also during the fire works. And soon they ask the birthday girl about her first kiss which dives us into the story as she recalls her first kiss.

Being Hiroko is suff…Oh hell no!

I have to tell you that it was quite interesting to see how Saki and Hiroko felt about each other in episode one then following their development on wards. In the beginning, Hiroko simply couldn’t stand Saki and Saki didn’t make things any easier with her complicated personality. I couldn’t decide if she didn’t like Hiroko or she did because she seemed to be seeking out her attention with all her mean actions, even though it looked like she actually didn’t mean anything bad by them. Add to the fact that Saki was uncomfortably close to Katase – on whom Hiroko had a deep crush on, and you know Saki wasn’t on the list of Hiroko’s best people.

These misunderstandings of course soon lead to a blow out and the two have their first cat-fight, if you can call it that, when Hiroko goes out of the way to woo Katase and Saki can’t help but comment on it. The fight, which by the way I wasn’t expecting from that character of Hiroko’s, but I did say this was one great drama, didn’t I, leads to them breaking the class’s prop for the upcoming festival which leads to the teachers ordering them to stay after school and repair it.

During this period the two mysteriously bond as Hiroko finds out that Saki mightn’t be that bad after all. They have the girls’ talk that is so popular which falls into the ‘have you ever been kissed?’ ‘have you done it yet?’ and so on. And so it shouldn’t come as a surprise that this line of talk lead to the actual kissing – A Kiss that would change everything for a ‘tower of babylon’- chasing Hiroko in the days that would follow.

The yuri in this first episode would be below average to those new to the community, what with Hiroko chasing after Katase’s little jonny like every other love-sick girl. I tell ya, I almost frowned and the first time I actually stopped watching it until my pal in China scolded me and promised me gold were I to finish even just the first episode.

The kiss though, the kiss and that scene where Saki watched as if mesmerised (well, there was slow-mo and everything and we all know slow-motion was serious love business back then) to the fields as Hiroko ran with the track team (Damn I didn’t even think Hiroko was the club kind. I swear she came off as a ‘going home’ club type of character at first glance)

And then of course DAT kiss at the end…

Cancelled out all the bad!

Actually, after watching the first episode a couple of times, I came to the conclusion that Saki might have already had feelings towards Hiroko. l that teasing, which wasn’t too bad from the observer, just in Hiroko’s POV, screamed attention – Just like those kindergarteners boys who tease the girls they like. Not to mention too that out of the whole class, Saki only approached Hiroko and on close observation, it was as if she didn’t give a tick about anybody else but strangely only Hiroko and the other students all seemed to avoid her like the plague, well, except Katase, whom she was best friends with, her only friend in fact but he wasn’t in her class and probably a childhood friend too so he had no choice in the matter. Not to mention too that he had a major crush on Saki too, like, since forever.

I will once again praise the acting in this drama. It was just so magnificent. And the pacing was first class as well. For five 5omin episodes, the story felt very well driven and complete by the end that I am still amazed it was only five episodes even to this day. It was that satisfying. Seriously, how many drams do you watch these days and they leave you not wanting more by the end? Speaking for myself – none! Actually, I haven’t watched any dramas yet this year at all. If anyone had any recommendations, please do send them this way.

Episode one had to have ended at the best moment I have ever seen. That kiss was so unexpected and the way that Hiroko – a girl that one was 120% sure was straight all that time before the moment, reacting the way she did was so very pleasantly delicious to the soul. Heh….So much for her saving her first kiss for her true love for when she’s married! Will you marry Saki now Hiroko?

I guess we shall have to wait until Episode 2 – Love Is War! to see what happens ^^

Well then, until next time…
